| Vista won't boot after windows update..help ! I downloaded and installed 2 optional updates for my ati x1900 on the update page and now my pc won't boot at all. Tried safe mode and F8, last known good config but it will not start. Safe mode gets up to system32/drivers/crcdsk.sys and then freezes. No way I can even get to system restore....please help |

| RE: Vista won't boot after windows update..help ! Reading other similar posts it seems it was a microsoft "recommended" update that caused the problem. Others seem to have solved it by using their recovery disk and repairing but how do I access my disk if vista doesn't boot ? |

If this doesn't work, and you have an actual Vista DVD, place the DVD in your tray and boot from the DVD, then choose the repair option in the menu that comes up after you choose the language. If you don't have a Vista DVD and only have a "recovery" disk provided by your OEM, you can try starting is safe mode (again, simply press F8 during boot and choose Safe Mode) and from there run System Restore and choose a restore point that's earlier than the date you installed the update. Word of advice, ignore ALL hardware driver updates offered by Windows Update. They more often than not break things . . . plus it seems this ATi update has been showing up even for systems that have no ATi hardware installed. Mic |

Insert your Vista Media into your dirve and boot from it. 2. Select "Repair your Computer" from the list. 3. Select "Command Prompt" from the recovery choices. 4. At the command prompt change your directory to C:WindowsWinSxS 5. Type: del pending.xml 6. Exit and reboot This will fix all Windows update reboot loops and does not require you to restore your PC to and earlier state. I carried out this operation the other day without Vista CD but with a boot disk called UBCD downloaded from the web. |

| Re: Vista won't boot after windows update..help ! Either get a bootable CD/DVD disk or replace your drive. You can also try unplugging and then reseating the connector cables that go to the CD/DVD drive. Sometimes it works. The fact that your disk will not boot has nothing to do with Windows. -- Richard Urban Microsoft MVP Windows Desktop Experience & Security "fcain72" <guest@unknown-email.com> wrote in message news:9c18cbdc6d74fe3b737e35bba8930e8d@nntp-gateway.com...[color=blue] > > I am having the same problem however after i changed bios to make the > DVD the first boot drive it still won't fix the problem. | Re: Vista won't boot after windows update..help ! I am having the same problem, but this did not work. On the command screen I have: X:\Sources>C::\Windows\WinSxS and then it says 'C:\Windows\WinSxS' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file. What am I doing wrong? Actually, not following instructions. 1. The X:\sources> is a prompt, not part of any command; it is perhaps set to show the directory you are in. 2. C:\Windows\WinSxS is a folder name, not a command. 3. You should type C: (followed by Enter) first to change the current drive for your command window to C: 4. Then type the command "cd \Windows\WinSxS" (without the quotes & followed by enter) to get to the correct folder ('folder' = 'directory") 5. Then do commands 5 and 6 as given by the one who calls him/herself "who?" If your system is not on drive C:, change all references to C: to the correct letter.
