| iTunes 7.5 won't install on Vista x64 What's the secret to getting iTunes 7.5 to install on Vista Ultimate x64? A previous version is already installed and a window pops up saying that version 7.5 is available. I click on install and it downloads but when it actually does the install it encounters an error and advises to install manually. Unfortunately that doesn't work either. It doesn't give any details on exactly what the error is so what's the secret to getting this to install? I have tried disabling AV and firewall but it didn't help. -- And loving it, -Q _________________________________________________ Qu0llSixFour******.com (Replace the "SixFour" with numbers to email me) |

| Re: iTunes 7.5 won't install on Vista x64 I personally have given up on iTunes on Vista x64 since Apple officially does not support the program on 64 bit versions of Windows. I suggest uninstalling the existing version then try installing 7.5 or just stick with the current version. I suspect the compatibility issue has some to do with the CD Burning driver. -- Andre Blog: http://adacosta.spaces.live.com My Vista Quickstart Guide: http://adacosta.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!E8E5CC039D51E3DB!9709.entry "Qu0ll" <Qu0llSixFour******.com> wrote in message news:%237QoxwbJIHA.3636@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > What's the secret to getting iTunes 7.5 to install on Vista Ultimate x64? > A previous version is already installed and a window pops up saying that > version 7.5 is available. To work around it, here's what I did. First, in the iTunes Update window, select the menu option to "Download Only". This will download about 4 MSI packages to a directory, C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Apple\Apple Software Update. Note that the AppData directory is normally hidden, in Explorer. After the files have finished downloading, open a Command Prompt "as administrator" (ie, find Command Prompt in the Start menu, right-click, and choose Run as Administrator from the context menu, give admin credentials when prompted). At the administrative command prompt, change directory to C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Apple\Apple Software Update (replacing "<user>" with your user name). Then run this command: C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Apple\Apple Software Update>msiexec /i itunes.msi The iTunes setup dialogue will appear. Follow the setup wizard, to complete installation. At the end, select the option to run iTunes, so that it will run once as administrator (this finalises some registry settings etc). Then exit out of iTunes. Close the Command Prompt by typing "exit". iTunes is now installed and you should be able to run it normally. If you are getting the error message about not being able to burn CDs, this is because iTunes des not include 64-bit drivers for CD and DVD drives. iTunes actually just OEM's the drivers from Gear Software; so you can grab the drivers direct from the Gear website and install them separately: http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.cfm After these 2 steps, I finally have iTunes running smoothly on 64-bit Vista. The 7.5 upgrade seems quite a bit more stable and snappier, it is worth upgrading. Hope this helps! -- Andrew McLaren amclar (at) optusnet dot com dot au |

| Re: iTunes 7.5 won't install on Vista x64 You need to completely uninstall iTunes, QuickTime, Apple Mobile Device Support, and Apple Software Update. The Vista uninstaller will only partially remove these programs leaving debris in files, folders, registry entries, etc. that blocks normal install processes. You can do a manual uninstall with the help of Windows Installer CleanUp Utility, or you can use a program like Smarty Uninstaller to completely remove all install/uninstall debris which will enable a clean install of iTunes 7.5. Details in this tutorial.
