I agree with the premise that if the housekeeping can be automated, then, why not? If the defragmenter can autonomously judge when it's necessary and defrag without taking away system resources, looks like it's more efficient than the user running analysis and defragging (manually/scheduling) ... watching paint dry while the system defrags a few hundred gigs or more of files.

But the other argument is also valid ...the manual control option is a must so it can be exercised if the need arises. Although Vista's defragger falls a bit short in this department, there are other (but payware) solutions that offer both.

As for Macs, correct me if I am wrong, but don't they silently defragment the most accessed/important files automatically in the background without even notifying the user?
