| Re: Micoshaft Asstroturfer Apparently Gets A Cease And Desist Order. If Linux is for the masses why is it that I haven't been able to install Ubuntu on any of the machines that I have tried. The last time was today when I tried a live cd in a virtual environment. It takes too much tech knowledge to install for the average person to use. I've been around computers for about ten years. Both building my own and using different machines since Windows 3.11 so I'm not a novice. -- The future is the past repainted "Mindy Cohen" <united4luv******.com> wrote in message news:fg2cin$er2$2@registered.motzarella.org... > On Sat, 27 Oct 2007 16:26:29 -0700, Telstar wrote: > > >> Indeed, you are the idiot of the present...not the future. But, you might be un-informed or unfamiliar with the aspects of hardware glitches built into machines made to run Microsoft, that won't or can't run a real OS that uses the full hardware specifications, (which the vendor skirted around during manufacturing, witness the many components that aren't mounted on many sound and video cards, and even mainboards). I just loaded a Compaq Presario 5310US, 1.2 Ghz with 384MB RAM, with PC-BSD for the simple reason that the video graphics on the mainboard don't measure up to the specifications that the maker officially lists they do meet! That machine runs perfectly with PCLinuxOS-p93 installed, but, the repository for that 2006 Distro closed on September 22nd, 2007. Without the ability to upgrade and install some of the 20 thousand free games and files, it is at a stop. PCLinuxOS 2007 won't configure, boot and install, on that machine. Nor will Fedora 7, Ubuntu 7.10. Kubuntu 5.04 loaded and ran well, but, again, I think it is a bit old and the update would waste my time, and possibly confuse the noob who will inherit this machine. I did boot mini-Knoppix V5.1.1 and others, but, PC-BSD was something I desire to learn about, and will probably be on the machine for a while. PC-BSD runs KDE desktop, and offers many free games! So, as you now see, many distros are tried out, and when one does work on the hardware, I use it, if it offers the majority of what I like. Please try some of the other distros of GNU/Linux and *BSD, found at http://livecdlist.com or http://distrowatch.com and, if not on a fast connection, see the inexpensive mailings there. |

So now it is not only Microsoft, but hardware even remotely connected to Microsoft. Did you know Microsoft is responsible for global warming, and Linux is green? |

OtOH, I'm at a loss what this thread has to do with Macintosh advocacy, to which it is cross-posted. Ubuntu is a huge step beyond the Linux experience from ten years ago. Nobody knows with any degree of authority whether Linux will ever become a wildly popular desktop OS, but I can tell you that it is quite functional if one takes the time to master it. For me, at this time, MacOS X is superior, but that's based on my personal choice. It does not mean desktop Linux (or even better for me, FreeBSD) is not functional. Like George posted, if one wants access to Mac only apps like iLife, Final Cut etc., Linux will not work. As always, YMMV and OALA, EHOATAS... |
