| downloaded Java upgrade won't activate I need a new version of Java, so I download it, and everything goes fine, but it's just the same Java it was, like nothing ever happened. Another download to use a printer did the same thing. Maybe ANY downloads like this are going to be null and void. Is there a gremlin in there that's at work? What do I do? | Re: downloaded Java upgrade won't activate So, do I have to do something in addition to following the java instructions? It showed everything went fine, but after restarting and all, I'm back to the old Java. | Re: downloaded Java upgrade won't activate You don't need to have the latest and greatest version of JAVA unless the applications and/or websites you use and visit require it. Once it works with Vista, it should work just fine. If you getting pop up notifications, just turn it off or ignore it. -- Andre Blog: http://adacosta.spaces.live.com My Vista Quickstart Guide: http://adacosta.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!E8E5CC039D51E3DB!9709.entry "cf" <cf@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:EC47BC7C-E23F-48D2-8EF4-23D718E0F702@microsoft.com... > So, do I have to do something in addition to following the java > instructions? > It showed everything went fine, but after restarting and all, I'm back to > the > old Java. > > "Andre Da Costa[ActiveWin]" wrote: > >> Well, I have the JAVA 6 Runtime for Windows Vista x86 installed and its >> working just fine with operating system: >> http://java.sun.com/javase/6/webnotes/install/system-configurations.html >> -- >> Andre >> Blog: http://adacosta.spaces.live.com >> My Vista Quickstart Guide: >> http://adacosta.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!E8E5CC039D51E3DB!9709.entry >> "cf" <cf@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message >> news:74EB87B0-40BC-4C50-ACDD-7BC8D2EDF088@microsoft.com... >> >I need a new version of Java, so I download it, and everything goes >> >fine, >> >but >> > it's just the same Java it was, like nothing ever happened. >> > >> > Another download to use a printer did the same thing. | Re: downloaded Java upgrade won't activate i upgraded because some sites I use regularly demand the higher level. I think there is some security that is keeping the downloaded upgrade from kicking in, but I get no window or message or anything, so I don't know how to override it. A few, but not all, of the programs now doing this are: Ad-aware's Ad-Watch IBM Access Connections McAfee VirusScan and/or Antispyware Norton AV Spyware Blaster Spybot> Tools> IE Tweaks Spybot- Teatimer Spysweeper Spyware Doctor Windows Defender Zone Alarm (free) 6.5 Reported to be fixed in later versions. In the case of Zone Alarm 6.5 or Norton 2007 it actually has to be uninstalled. Make sure the Windows Firewall is turned on until you reinstall Zone Alarm. Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and try the change. -- Frank Saunders MS-MVP IE,OE/WM www.fjsmjs.com Do not send email |
