In a post some time ago, I complained that I could not open links to the
internet from my
Windows Mail browser.

That was never resolved...until yesterday..

After having a number of problems related to Windows Vista, I finally
decided that the installation (which came with the computer from Compaq) was
so corrupted that nothing was working any longer, nor would a System Restore
cure the issues.

I did a System Recover, after a backup. Now the links work, everything
works as it should. I dont know how LONG it will continue to work.

I was using Avast antivirus on my old setup, and PC Tools Firewall, and I
suspect that these two bits of software were conflicting with the Windows
Vista system.

This computer came blundered with Norton Security, and because of a long
history of poor results from Norton, I removed it and added the freeware
mentioned above. This should have been a clue, because the Norton could not
be uninstalled in the traditional manner.
I had to use the Norton Removal tool to get it out.

Now I have installed McAfee to see if it will work any better.

Sorry to bore you all, but at least there is a little hope, now, for this
Vista setup.

McAfee is pretty much the same as Norton.

You would probably be better off with AVG Free, Avast or Nod32.
If you would like a performance increase, change to one of these.

McAfee is just about as bad as Norton. I recommend Avast! or NOD32.

I was using Avast when the problems occurred....twice. Apparently Avast
was involved with the problem. Upon doing some research, Avast apparently
falsely recognizes some files as being infected and they are changed or
quaranteened.
That is where feces and fan meet.

There was also the possibility that PC Tools Firewall was not working
correctly
with either Vista or Avast..

I went to McAfee to try to get something that would work harmoniously.

to which I had subscribed for years, gave me so many problems with my old
Windows 2000 platform, and Norton was so inept at tech service, that I made
the
change to Avast long ago.

The facts seem to be, to me, that these systems are getting too complicated
and tweaky,
at least for a "gammeldagers" like myself. I have no more patience with
bells that whistle and
whistles that tinkle.

I would be MUCH happier with even a Windows 2000 or XP platform than what I
have today. I am very disappointed with this new computer and its blundered
(bundled)
inoperating system.

You just THINK you've gotten rid of Norton. Scan the registry for
Norton/Symantec. You'll be surprised.

Norton is the ex-wife of the software world. Short of sinking it in a bog,
it will continue to give you grief.

Avast works better if you do a custom install and tell it not to scan email
files.
