Windows Vista Display Problems

Hello Everyone,

I just now upgraded my home machine to Windows Vista Ultimate edition.

I have a NVidia GeForce FX 5600 graphics card and a Samsung 940 BW 19 inch
Wide Screen Monitor. My monitor is capabile of 1440 * 900 resolution at 75
Hz.

After installation. Windows Vista downloaded the latest drivers for the
graphics card from the windows update web site.

However after the upgrade my desktop is completely distorted and stretched.
The resolution which the monitor is having is 1280 * 1024. If I uncheck the
option of "hide modes this monitor cannot display" I get another option of
1920 * 1080.

On setting both these resolutions, my display is still distorted and windows
vista does not give me the option of setting 1440 * 900 resolution.

My monitors tech specs say that its capable of displaying 1440 * 900
resolution. My graphics card has power of displaying more resolution than
1440 * 900.

However I am still not able to set the right resolution.

regards,
Abhishek.

RE: Windows Vista Display Problems

Never download hardware drivers from Microsoft updates!
They are either generic or out-of-date!

Go to Nvidia's website and download your Graphics Card's Vista Driver direct
from there.

RE: Windows Vista Display Problems

Hi Abhishek,

As has been mentioned by several people on these newsgroups (myself
included), you should not install hardware drivers from Microsoft. These
should be obtained directly from the manufacturer, in your case Nvidia. The
current driver for your card is 96.85 -
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_96.85_2.html (32-bit) or
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x64_96.85_2.html (64-bit). If you have
a PCI -E slot, you might be better off upgrading your graphics card. My
current card is a 7600GT, driver version 163.69 and my monitor has a
resolution of 1440 * 900.

Re: Windows Vista Display Problems

The available display resolutions are a function of your video card (and it
drivers) - no matter "what" the monitor is capable of displaying. I had a
Nvidia 5600 that I dumped because it would not supply the resolution I
needed.
