Office not working properly due to lack of SndRec32.exe in Vista

I've tolerated the problems with Vista because I understand it's a rework of
an OS and the transition is much smoother than when 95 came out. But when
MS's own products are rendered incompatible, it's kind of the the straw
breaking the camel's back.

So here's my problem. I've looked all over and even talked to MS Office tech
support but even they don't have a fix. In XP, Word 2003/2007 can embed other
file types directly in the document. If it's known, it's displayed and if
not, it's placed in a "package." Office uses SndRec32.exe to handle wav files
and does so transparently. However, the replacement of SndRec32 with
SoundRecorder in Vista has--this is the only way I can express my feelings
towards this---completely F'd things up. If I take a document created using
Word in an XP environment and open it under Vista, Vista forces Word to open
up WMP to play embedded wav objects. I can't edit the files either since the
"best" version of Vista is restricted to wma. I found a semi-successful
workaround which is copying SndRec32 from XP and associating it in Vista. The
problem with that is Word still treats it as a foreign app and places the
object in a package. Word is clearly able to handle wav files directly since
it does so in XP. All the elements are available, file associations are
correct. So then, what is preventing Word from handling the objects as it
does in XP? Is it a registry issue? If anyone knows how to fix this, everyone
at my university's foreign language dept. would be forever grateful.

Re: Office not working properly due to lack of SndRec32.exe in Vis

Like I already said, tried that already. This is the response I got.

"I apologize for not being much of help to you on this issue as it is not
related to Word 2007 and related to Vista system. My Expertise is with Word
2007 and I tried my best if I can use some settings in Word 2007 to help you
with this issue but it is out of scope of Office 2007 and related to Vista
object."
