I don't remember Steve Dahl on the radio (I was very young then and only
have selective memories) But I remember watching his TV show. Were you
still around to catch Johnny B on WLUP?

Yep, I remember John Brandmeier, when he used to be on some AM station
I forget which. I think I got a few years on you, maybe a couple
decades at least ;-)

When I first started working I use to listen to WGN and Wally Phillips
who in the 60's had the most popular morning drive show in Chicago.

Me old? Well, when I was in grade school, (in the 50's) 1st, 2nd grade
or so Elmer the Elephant, Garfield Goose were on TV and Leave it to
Beaver was first run on prime time shortly after. Street lights in
Chicago weren't metal poles yet, all concrete and mail boxes were a
drab olive color. First class stamps were 3 then 4 cents. Candy bars
were twice the size they are now and cost a dime. Later it cost a
whole quarter to ride the CTA. LOL!

Midway Airport (see lower left hand corner near 63rd & Central) once
had a public school on the property where one of the main runways are
now and planes couldn't land during school hours.

Wow, with Frasier Thomas, no kidding!

Was that public school one you went to? I thought I remember you saying
you lived right in that vicinity growing up.

Yes, you do have a few years on me, I was born when you were about my
current age probably. Thanks for the history lesson, I enjoyed it. :)

No, went to a different one. We first lived about a mile and half East
of the airport, then a couple miles West. I used to ride my bike out
to the airport all the time. Because the airport is so small, just a
square mile, you could get really close seeing the planes land. They
didn't have any barriers just a chain link fence. That was back in the
days when jets were first coming on the scene, then, late 50's, early
60's the jets were too big to land at Midway. Still the prop
commercial airliners were BIG and noisy. I'm talking a lot of
Lockheed's Constellation. See image.

http://www.conniesurvivors.com/pictures/2007_Constellation.jpg

I actually liked to go visit my uncle because he was one of the first
to have a color TV. The real attraction was the above planes and
others models went flying over his house every couple minutes if the
wind direction was right because my uncle's house was just couple
blocks off the end of one of the runways. Literally the planes were so
low they would shake the house, you couldn't hear the tv for several
seconds and if you were outside, I'd guess maybe they were just about
100-150 feet above my uncle's roof. Kind of exciting for a kid to
watch. ;-)

One more story, ok two quick ones.

Because of the Soviet Union getting the H bomb, it was required that
all public schools practice fire drills in case of nuclear attack.
What we know now of course it was totally silly and pointless, but
every month or so without warning the teachers after the fire drill
sounded would march us kids out in the hall, we were suppose to get
away from windows, crouch down, protect you heads, etc., like if that
would protect us from a nuclear attack.

The scariest time was October 1962. I was in high school, and the
anxiety was palpable and you could tell the way people acted. This of
course was the Cuban Missile Crisis. I was in a Sears with my dad, we
like everyone else stopped to watch President Kennedy's address and
the odds seemed better than 50/50 that we and Russians would start
lobbing nuclear missiles at each other.

I was born in Chicago, lived there till 1978 then moved to the far
Western suburb of Naperville about 32 miles West of Downtown Chicago.
Still there. I know, the name sounds like it is a sleepy little
village, once was, back in the early 1800's, now it has grown to about
145,000, 4th largest city in Illinois.

Not to brag but:

The City of Naperville has been recognized by a number of
organizations in the last ten years. The city was previously
recognized by Money Magazine as the best place to live in the Midwest
in 2003. Naperville was also recognized by Money Magazine as one of
the best places to retire in the United States. In 1997 and 2001, the
city was voted a top city in the nation to raise children. In
addition, Naperville is home to one of the top library systems in the
country, and is the only city worldwide to have an accredited museum,
police, fire and emergency communications department.

http://www.naperville.il.us/dynamic_content.aspx?id=766

I wish the high school I went to looked like what they build a few
years back. Set the taxpayers back over $150 million. Has a sports
complex and training/weight rooms any NFL team would die for. Ditto
for computer labs and just about everything else. Lucky kids!

http://nvhs.ipsd.org/about.asp

No real estate slump here. Homes often sell in a week or less. I'm not
kidding, we've had people drive up, knock on the door out of the blue
and ask if we would be interesting in selling, because they are
desperate to get their kids in the outstanding Naperville school
district. It is a nice community, has an historic district, old
mansions near the center of town a thriving downtown area, lots of
parks and open space then rental for modest amounts up to super fancy
condos and single family housing from about $180,000 up to multi
million three story river front property. Naperville is spread out
over about 30 square miles, some areas are a little congested, where I
am some people have large enough lots to have a horse.

"Naperville... is the only city worldwide to have an accredited museum,
police, fire and emergency communications department."

That seems a strange claim. I guess I'm having trouble parsing the
sentence. Is the department a "museum, police, fire and emergency
communications" one? Does "accredited" apply to each of the entities? It
doesn't seem on the face of it to be unique, however good. I'd expect
every city with an accredited museum to have the other facilities. New
York? London?

I found that statement odd too, but it was on the official Naperville
web site, next to last paragraph from bottom, so not sure what they're
getting at.

http://www.naperville.il.us/dynamic_content.aspx?id=766

The accredited museum they are probably referring to is likely Naper
Settlement a small recreated village within the city limits near
downtown that has refurbished homes, shops and public buildings that
exhibit a collection of historical facts and furnishings. Tours are
conducted by volunteers in period dress circa early 1800's. Again,
I've seen that elsewhere too.

I took the picture tour of the Naper Settlement and the museum. There is
a fire station, but police and emergency communications don't appear to
be part of it. Curious, but enough time spent on the puzzle...

Naperville is a very nice place, and as far as I can remember, it's
always been a very upscale place to live. I used to work there about 10
yrs ago. I was born and raised in the northwest suburbs, and still live
near there. That puts me somewhere geographically in between you and
Kevin. Howdy neighbor! :)

Well of course not. Naperville is a very progressive city and has
state of the art everything. The main police and fire headquarters are
on the West end of the city in a newish building, several miles from
the Naper Settlement.

The Naperville Fire Department is one of a select few Fire Departments
in the U.S. to have been awarded accreditation status by the
Commission Fire Service Accreditation International Some world wide
body. What that means, I have no idea. It is highly rated in
effectiveness comparable with much larger cites which translates to
lower home owner insurance rates. They are very proud that most of
full time fire fighters are also fully qualified paramedics as well.

Something else, more cities and town should have are a network of
automated external defibrillator locations. See map:

The goal is to make Naperville the most "heart-safe" community in the
world, it already is the safest in Illinois. So far about 50 locations
have them. Also selected trained city employees from the park district
to police officers carry the portable devices in their vehicles.

Also Naperville buys electrical power wholesale and maintains the
infrastructure themselves saving residents a fat 40% in costs.
