Install Failure (Code 80070643) When Applying KB938123

I get failure Code 80070643 when running Windows Update for KB938123.
Documentation for Code 80070643 blabs on about Office Source Engine (OSE)
service needing to be set to "Automatic (Delayed Start)" and started, which
I've done. But this isn't an Office update; KB938123 is a security patch for
Windows Vista Gadgets.

This update had been crippling all my other updates. I just spent all day
long going through about thirteen updates, doing one at a time, each one
takes twenty minutes just to initialize the updater (gawd I hate this part
of Vista!!), and leaving out this last one that kept failing. Now I need to
get this one out of my way. I know I can disable it but it looks like it's
an important one, as I do use Gadgets.

I've manually downloaded the update from the Update Catalog. Same failure.

I've also tried executing (from the command prompt): "fsutil resource
setautoreset true C:\", then rebooted. No change.

Microsoft's Support web site has no documentation for KB938123 failing with
Code 80070643.

Security Update for Windows Vista (KB938123)
Installation date: ?10/?8/?2007 3:28 AM
Installation status: Failed
Error details: Code 80070643
Update type: Important
A security issue has been identified in Windows Vista Gadgets that could

Unresolved; I've also .. (Re: Install Failure (Code 80070643) When Applying KB938123)

I forgot to mention that I also copied over OSE.exe from the Office 2007
install disc and replaced the same file in the Common Files subdirectory.

Again, though, this isn't an Office update, so I tend to wonder if the error
code is wrong or redundant and actually maps to an undocumented Windows
error rather than an Office error.
