Can't send or receive e-mail. So far everyone is stumped.

I'm new to this so hang in there with me.
I have Microsoft Windows Mail through Vista and for the last few days have
not been able to send or receive e-mails.
My internet provider (AT&T) has tried to help me to ensure all the settings
are correct.
When I attempt to send/receive mail, I get a pop up message that says,
"Please verify that both the username and password are correct for your mail
server." I've done that over and over again, and it won't go away.

If I try to Cancel it, I get this:

Account: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Server: 'pop.att.yahoo.com', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR invalid user/password', Port: 995, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

How can I reset my username and password and try to start fresh? Yesterday
the username/password pop up wasn't there, but a different error code was.

I need help! Thanks!

RE: Can't send or receive e-mail. So far everyone is stumped.

Yahoo Mail is a web based email prigram, and nothing to do with AT & T.
Delete "yahoo" out of both incoming and outgoing mail servers!
In fact, ring them back, and ask what your incoming and outgoing , username
and password should be.

I had the same problem and I cannot remember the exact solution but go
into tools /options under send/ mail options and check if you have these
settings

For Mail Plain text Mime is checked and encode text = none
then under HTML settings encode text = quoted printable

See if that helps

I had seen this at the bellsouth web site and think since they merged it
maybe the same problem

Try the following: delete your mail account and create it new from scratch
with your correct data. Verify with your provider that you make use of the
correct entries for username, password and the server names.

You have the pop3 server set up improperly. Ask ATT what it should be.
"Yahoo" should not be present in it.

While you're at it, get them to also tell what the smtp server should
be and make sure that's set up correctly too. You probably have a
similar error in both settings.

Your statement is incorrect. The servers are as follows:
pop.att.yahoo.com
smtp.att.yahoo.com

Also, if you are using anti-virus email scanning, disable it. Problems
such as you are seeing can be caused by such scanning. Post back with
your virus scan program name if you need advice as to turning of the
email scanning.

Re: Can't send or receive e-mail. So far everyone is stumped.

Yo Stacie--

Delete the account--it's configured with the wrong server name.
Follow directions you've been given to set up the account.
Find out from your local ATT provider's site what server name to use. It
sure isn't anything with yahoo in it--I don't know how and why you had yahoo
in what you gave us.

Also keep in mind this--(lol most of those socket error explanations will
help you as much as a bucket of paint to paint the tallest building in Kuala
Lumpur.

I also have this thought. I'm sure what you posted with yahoo in it
indicates you have the server name configured wrong. Did you configure this
and with whose directions.

Again if you go to ATT's site--that'd be the ISP and type in Outlook Express
or Windows Mail, you'll see with pics exactly how to configure this and what
server name to use for your location.

Good luck,

CH

Anytime Vista screws up, which is daily for a lot of people, the first
thing to try is a rollback with a restore point prior to a point
previous to when you first noticed whatever system problem you're
having now.
