Where is Vista defrag?

Vista refuses to allow me to install and run Diskeeper Lite, and my ISP has
deleted all newsgroup messages before 09/30. And, to my surprise, I cannot
find where Vista is hiding the defrag program. OK, I installed Vista last
weekend, and have been working my way around, but still cannot find the
defrag option. There is a defrag option under system tools, but when I try
to run it I get an error message about ".......snap-in". Perhaps I need to
do a repair install?

Re: Where is Vista defrag?

where did you leave it last? ha ha ha ha sorry i'm feeling like a clown
today.

the only place for sure i know where it is, is the the computer then the
hard drive you want to defrag then right click to properties, then look in
there there's usually one. don't know if it'll work since you said you had
issue but that's where it's located

Open an administrative command prompt and then
defrag /?

Typically the defragmentation utility is here:

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter

But note as well, defrag.exe can be run from a Command Prompt [the Command
Prompt must be running as an admin]:

Start > All Programs > Accessories > right-click on "Command Prompt" and
select "Run as administrator"

When the Command Prompt opens type:

defrag /?
[then hit Enter]

at the prompt for usage and to get a list of the switches etc. etc.

You can write a batch file to run defrag which makes it very easy to use,
the small caveat being one must run the batch file by a shortcut to it set
to run as an administrator [easy enough to achieve].

Note that defrag is meant to work as a background 'set it and forget it'
utility and does not provide the visual feedback Windows 95/98/XP users are
used to.

There is no more pretty defrag. Now it is an ugly command line tool.

run defrag /? from the command prompt to get all teh details.

Re: Where is Vista defrag?

Schedule Disk Defragmenter to run regularly is the best routine.

Disk Defragmenter rearranges fragmented data so your hard disk can work more
efficiently. In this version of Windows, Disk Defragmenter runs at regular
intervals when your computer is turned on, so you don't have to remember to
run it.

Disk Defragmenter on my computer is set to run every week to ensure my disk
is defragmented. I don't need to do anything else. However, I can change how
often Disk Defragmenter runs, and at what time of the day.

To open Disk Defragmenter Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk
Defragmenter.? If you are prompted for an administrator password or
confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Click Modify schedule....

In the Disk Defragmenter: Modify Schedule dialog box, choose how often, what
day, and at what time of the day you want defragmentation to occur, and then
click OK.

Click OK again.
