When will Windows XP Updates Expire?

Does anyone know when Microsoft plans to end updates for Windows XP & force
us to upgrade to Vista?

Thanks!

Re: When will Windows XP Updates Expire?

For anyone who wants to check out the details:

http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifeselectindex

XP Home was due to end mainstream support
last year. That was extended to "2 years after
Vista's release". It's currently set to 4/09. Probably
that will end up being extended, as Win98 was.
It depends on how widespread XP is by then.
The real question is when will they begin to refuse
new product activation codes. That's really up to MS.
Their support schedules are subject to change.

AFAIK they will not be refusing activation, ever. As a matter of fact, I
think the plan was that, in a few years, they would release a patch that
would turn off the need for activation.

You might be right. You might not be.

That's the chance you take with Product
Activation. *It's Microsoft's decision to make.*

Personally I wouldn't want to buy XP, blow a
motherboard sometime down the road, at a time
when MS is trying hard to eliminate all XP use,
and be depending on their generoisty to give me
a new code so that I can continue using the product
I paid for.

I distinctly remember the talk and the word was out that once done it's
product run a patch would be issed to turn off product activation, i.e. that
customers would not be left in the lurch.

All windows product licenses are perpetual. Whether support for a product
ends or not, you will never be unable to activate.

And yes, the comment about 'a patch being released to remove the activation
component will be provided' is true.

They expire as soon as you get the windows stealth updates and then run
a repair install on XP.
