Complete Backup in Vista Ultimate

I was wondering if anyone could help? I'm trying to do a Complete PC backup
and after a while I get a message that says, "Backup did nor complete
successfully. The drive cannot find the sector required (0x8007001B)"
I have Vista Ultimate and am backing up to an extrenal hard drive.
I have no problems backing up files & folders but would like to do a
complete backup.
If anyone could help, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks

Re: Complete Backup in Vista Ultimate

It sounds like a disk error, though I would be surprised at that. The disk
technology is such that it could recover from an error without your knowing
it happened, though it may not have completed that operation. I wouldn't
expect that type of an error message if you removed a file or device after
the directory scan, though it could be if it trapped to a lazy programmer's
error message. It would be nice if the error message told what it actually
found. I don't think Ultimate does an image backup; if it does, the error
message you got would be possible, though even then not likely.

It would be nice if Ultimate told us what it was doing, especially when you
get errors like that. I think a backup program should be able to tell you
exactly what it has done, so you could tell what was not done. I usually
like to find some test files in the backup and do a "compare" to the
original, if just for a confidence check. I would like to know what Backup
has done with files that are open when Windows is open. If I were to
restore, what would I get?

When you run or schedule a backup, it's a good idea to go find something
else to do during backup. If you are using a file during backup, it may not
get backed up like you may think. It's always possible that it could be in
some unanticipated state, causing the error you saw.

Try it again during a time when you won't be using the computer.

Re: Complete Backup in Vista Ultimate

Thanks John. I appreciate you taking the time to try to help me. I do leave
the PC whilst it backs up so that's not the problem. The Vista help says that
only the Home edition and Home Premium edition don't have Complete PC backup
so I assume from that that Ultimate does. It's a brand new computer too.
A bit of a mystery this as normal backup works fine.
Thanks again for your help.
