| Duplicate icons on Welcome Screen I have a new Lenovo laptop with Vista Home Premium installed. I set up only one user account during the setup wizard and have not added any since. For the first several restarts there was one icon on the welcome screen. Now there are two copies of the same user icon. They both show "logged in" or "locked" and it doesn't matter which one I choose, I get into the same profile. They are truly duplicates. My laptop has an Omnipass finger scanner, which is setup, but the duplicate login icon didn't show up right afterwards, I'm pretty sure, so this may be superfluous info. I've googled every keyword I can think of. I'm assuming that we're still calling the login screen the "Welcome Screen", even though it's not labeled that way. Anyway, has anyone else had this issue and found a resolution to it? Thanks in advance! |

| Re: Duplicate icons on Welcome Screen Cynthia This appears to be a recent problem that is affecting a few users. It may have been caused by a recent update or? There isn't a lot of information, so far and no apparent fixes. If you could give us some more information, it would be helpful. When you go to Control Panel/User Accounts, do you see both user accounts there? Are they a member of the same group? (ie: Standard or Administrator) Go to Start and type cmd.exe. In the results, right click the cmd.exe link and select the Run As Administrator option. In the command window, type: net user and press Enter. What are the names of all the accounts shown below the dotted line? | I have been researching this issue and see it on a number of website. The problem is related to a Vista update (don't know which one) which occurred around 8/27/07. The common solution is to uninstall Omnipass and then reinstall it. I have two Lenovo notebooks using Vista: both 3000 N100 model. Unfortunately the Lenovos don't come with software CDs, a they recommend creating recovery disks which do not have the software accessible. However, you can access the setup file to reinstall Omnipass in the C:\SWTools\Drivers\FPRA directory. All you need to do is uninstall Omnipass from the computer-add/remove programs screen, and then reload Omnipass from the setup file in the above directory. Took 5 minutes. I'm guessing that other model computers with Vista and Omnipass are seeing the same duplicate icon problem at the welcome screen. If you search your computer and find the Omnipass setup file, you may be able to use the same trick. Good luck |

| Re: Duplicate icons on Welcome Screen I have the same problem. I have a new Fujitsu A6025 with the OmniPass as well. My double icons appeared right after I did the first update with Microsoft. (It has Windows Vista Home Premium) When I look in Control Panel/User Accounts it only shows one.On the Welcome screen it doesn't matter which one I click, they both have the exact same programs running, etc. Is Microsoft working on a fix for this? I'm not sure if I'm up to deleating drivers and reinstalling them like some have said to do to get rid of it. | Re: Duplicate icons on Welcome Screen From Ronnie Vernon, MVP: Many people are having this same problem. The problem has been identified as a conflict between the OmniPass fingerprint reader software and Vista. If you have a fingerprint reader with the OmniPass software installed, here is the latest information posted by another user who fixed the problem. See: http://groups.google.com/group/micro...43d05ec621e262 -- Regards, Ramesh Srinivasan, Microsoft MVP [Windows Shell/User] Windows® Troubleshooting http://www.winhelponline.com "KarenM" <KarenM.32iqd3@no-mx.forums.net> wrote in message news:KarenM.32iqd3@no-mx.forums.net... Does anyone know if a fix has been create for the duplicate icon yet? I have a Lenovo running Vista Home Premium and the problem appeared after I ran the first Microsoft update. -- KarenM |

| RE: Duplicate icons on Welcome Screen I have run into exactly the same problem myself (Right down to the model of Lenovo Laptop!). Fortunately, I have documented a complete fix to the problem on my blog. Have a look at: http://tech.nztechie.com/2008/01/omn...ws-update.html An uninstall of Omnipass will not be required. |
