| Re: Sick Of Vista? Try Out Windows Server 2008 Public Beta Instead, Just FYI. Kevin; It is unlikely Server 2008 Beta will meet the long term needs of Windows Vista users. As you already said, Server 2008 is a Beta. That has several implications a few being: 1. Time limited, unlike released products, use will end at a certain time and users will be forced to again move operating systems. 2. Beta by definition is unfinished and still in testing. That means you can expect issues, large and small. It also means you may have no recourse if there are issues. You should never install Beta unless you are prepared for complete data loss and willing to perform a Clean Installation to resolve any issues. While that is a bit extreme, it is what Beta users should be prepared as it is the nature of Beta. This applies to Beta anything from any source, not just Microsoft. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar http://www.dts-l.org <kevpan815********.com> wrote in message news:1F1DE677-D0BA-41A1-9F1F-C791FCA8788F@microsoft.com... > http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008 > |

| He really thought this one out - Just FYI So with your brilliant logic, everybody move to Windows Server if they don't like Vista, look at what it costs there slick. If they wipe out Vista and install the Beta, many software products will not work. How about antivirus for instance? The client version won't work. You will need the server version which costs more money. Think with that tiny brain of yours. What happens when the Beta expires, Just FYI. They will need to purchase a release copy. Just FYI. There are fewer drivers available for Windows Server 2008 than there are for Vista so hardware problems are likely to occur. Why do you suggest it is worth a try? |

| Re: Sick Of Vista? Try Out Windows Server 2008 Public Beta Instead, Just FYI. Saucy, You quite rightly identify that if a program is written in full compliance with windows API's (or .NET) then it ought to work. But, of course, not all programs were written with Vista in mind. However, the point here is that many programs won't work on Server 2008 and, so soon into it's development (it is still in beta) there are not many drivers available - especially drivers for devices aimed at the home/games market. So, my question remains. Exactly what convinced kevpan815********.com to suggest trying out Windows Server 2008? | Re: Sick Of Vista? Try Out Windows Server 2008 Public Beta Instead,Just FYI. We have been testing Windows Server 2008 since April 2007 on multiple hardware platforms including Dell PowerEdge SC440, 800, 1800, 1900 and 2900 computers and a specially constructed computer that is based on the Intel D975XBX2 motherboard. Server 2008 installs and functions on these platforms with no problems. Driver support is available for all the on-board modules and for all of the add-on boards that we use including SIIG SATA controllers, RME HSDP 9632 sound boards, the GeForce 7600GT video adapter that is used with the Intel motherboard and the Matrox P650 and Parhelia 256 PCI video boards that are used with the PowerEdge hardware. (PowerEdge cannot use PCIe graphics boards because the PCIe sockets are 8 rather than 16 lane mechanical as is required by all current PCIe graphics cards). Server 2008 is beta, but it is still the most stable operating system that we have used. Windows Server 2003, which we use for production purposes, is pretty stable, but Server 2008 is even more reliable. We have not had a single BSOD since April 2007. There are about 50 programs that we utilize on a regular basis. These include a number of widely used programs, for example: Adobe Reader and Photoshop, Microsoft Office, SQL Server, and Visual Studio; Internet Explorer and Sea Monkey; Intuit's Quicken and QuickBooks; Samplitude and Dragon NaturallySpeaking. Some application program versions are incompatible with Server 2008, but we have not encountered a single commonly used program the current version of which does not run properly on Server. Extensive testing has clearly demonstrated that Windows Server 2008 is an ultra stable operating system and that compatible drivers and application programs are readily available. |

Exactly what convinced kevpan815********.com to > suggest trying out Windows Server 2008? Kevin is just talking out of his hat. He sees a beta product, wants to try it. If it looks good, he tells the world to ditch Vista and install what he's been playing with. When he found Ubuntu, he ranted for days how he was going to be the Ubuntu guru and spread the word. I guess when he figured out that it wasn't just fun and games, he ditched it and moved on.
