I HATE VISTA

I don't suppose this will be allowed to stay on here, but I have to vent. I
got Vista with my new Dell computer, and so far, I have had to replace 4
programs that don't run on vista, and for which the companies "don't plan any
upgrades in the near future". This has cost me a lot of money that I don't
have. The computer was a large expense for me, and now it is getting
rediculous. I am now looking unsuccessfully for a simple photo editing
software program that will run that has the features my old program had, and
I am very frustrated. Knowing what I know now, I would have never had Vista,
and would have paid extra to have XP put on my new computer. Thank you for
letting me vent.

Re: I HATE VISTA

I know it is a little too late.
but there is an upgrade advisor on ms vista web site to evaluate your computer before upgrade.
even a new one you could have run it against your old one to check the programs.

it is not perfect by any means but a good starting place.

It's no accident that you're being fleeced. Microsoft made conscious
design choices with Vista to ensure it would be incompatible with older
hardware and software.

After all, what good does it do Microsoft's shareholders to know that
people with 5-year-old XP systems are still satisfied with what they've
got???

I would suggest you contact Dell customer service and ask them if you can
exchange your Vista license for an XP license. Scuttlebutt has it that
people who are persistent with such requests eventually get what they
want. At the very least, you should let Dell know that you are not happy
with Vista.

Re: I HATE VISTA

Many , Many older programs that don't (officialy) work with Vista, really do
work fine, some require you run the compatability wizzard as XP sp2. And
some, do require replacement....give them a try (except a/v or disk mgmt
software) and see what happens.

What was your old photo editing program?

If you only do simple touch up then the build in Photo Galley may be
enough. If you need more you can install GIMP which is a top rated
Photoshop clone and costs you nothing. There are plenty of
applications in between the two extremes that run fine with Vista.

A couple pretty good places to start looking:

Re: I HATE VISTA

Also, you should try a virtual machine, such as Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007
or innotek's VirtualBox.

These will let you run legacy apps very successfully. Of course, you would
need an XP licence...

Your choice, but you would do better if you would ask for help with
your problems instead of venting. Complaining isn't usually the best
way to get your problems solved.

Did you run the free Microsoft Vista Upgrade Advisor before getting
Vista? It would have told you what you had on your computer that might
not be compatible.

What were the programs, by the way?

I certainly understand that you are unhappy with the result, but
please realize that *you* didn't take the trouble to find out whether
they were compatible before getting Vista. You have nobody to blame
but yourself. As I said, Microsoft even made a tool available to help
you get this information.

What was the old one? It's hard to recommend one with "the features
[your] old program" if you don't tell us what it was.

> Knowing what I know now, I would have never had Vista,

Once again, who do you want to blame for your not having taken the
trouble to get needed information *before* you bought? Would you buy a
car that way?

Well whose fault is this?
Yours?
the software companies?

tried to load programs on Vista that don't run on Vista? Why?

Sounds like you got what you deserved.

Lesson learned?
Plan ahead?

Oh, btw, Vista still loves you.

You may want to contact Dell, and see if they can furnish XP
to you. Explain the situation, and tell them you didn't know what
you were getting into. I think they'd rather keep a customer...

Whaaaaat? Geez, I've read some crazy stuff in here, but "...Microsoft made
conscious design choices with Vista to ensure it would be imcompatible with
older hardware and software." makes me ask... what's your source on that?
That's nuts.

Rule #1: Do not move to a new version of Windows without applying basic due
diligence. Scratch that... do not move to -any- new OS without applying
basic due diligence. (I.e., will my apps run on the new OS? Will my hardware
work with the new OS?) Knowing what you know now is not the same as knowing
what you should know -prior- to making such a move. Sorry if that comes off
harsh... that's not my intent... one must do -some- investigation before
jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

It would be most helpful if you disclosed your "old" photo editing program
and those features which you desire in a "new" photo editing program. We use
Picasa here... it's free and it's pretty good. Whether Picasa will work for
you cannot be determined unless you disclose your needs in a photo editing
program.

Lang
