Windows Easy Transfer

Hi
In trying to transfer files from XP to Vista using subject I keep getting
the message:
"There was an error scanning the data on your system windows easy transfer
will now be cancelled"
How can I overcome this?
Many thanks,
Grant

Re: Windows Easy Transfer

I used Vista Easy to Transfer my IE7 bookmarks from my old computer to the
new computer. The menu of Easy to Transfer is not totally clear. I made a
couple mistakes like opening up a new user account as I tried to decipher the
instructions of the Easy Transfer menus. So, it took me about 3 tries to get
it. Also, I had to open my IE7 and place the bookmarks on the address bar to
get the new IE7 of the new computer to look like my old one.

As for all of my data files such as music, video and word docs, I copied all
those files from my old computer onto a portable drive. Then copied those
files from the portable drive onto the new Vista computer. I find that to be
the fastest-least hassle- no surprises way to transfer data files.

RE: Windows Easy Transfer

It does not Mick and I suggest you stop posting generic instructions...they
do not offer support when something goes wrong...as is the case with myself
this guy and other's whom you've pointed to those generic instructions.
Anyone can follow the prompts when everything goes well and they match the
instructions...unless the instructions point out some pitfall that the
prompts don't warn you about, they are not helpful.

RE: Windows Easy Transfer

Sorry about that last post. I had the same problem and this is what I did to
make it work.

I ended up performing the Easy Transfer from my XP maching to an external
harddrive. But, before I did that, I shut down the Vista machine while the
file transfer was in progress. After the XP transfer was complete, I moved
the USB cable for the external drive from my XP machine to my Vista machine(I
assume CD/DVD would work the same way). I then powered up the Vista machine
and performed the Easy Transfer. Total transfer size 109 GB.

If you have your XP machine as a media device on your target Vista machine
this causes the Vista machine to monitor files on your XP machine resulting
in the Error message.

Also, I noted in the seuptactlog.txt that there was a problem with Nero
files. I uninstalled Nero prior to transfer as well. Don't know if that
helped or not.
