First Vista Printer USB or Local?

Hi,

Does Vista Home Premium NOT accept a USB printer as its only/first printer?

My Lexmark Z23-33 is recognized by the USB function but not visible nor addressable under Printers.

Do I really need an old 'local' printer with the big connector as a first printer?

Is there a workaround?

Curious,
Maria

I have a USB printer as my only printer under Vista Home Premium. No
problem.

Certainly you can connect a printer locally (which means directly
attached to the computer) with a USB cable. Certainly you can have only
the single printer. Of course you must have the correct drivers for any
printer. Did you go to Lexmark's tech support site and get drivers for
your printer? Is your model supported in Vista?

Re: First Vista Printer USB or Local?

Did you run the set up program properly? You usually leave the usb printer disconnected until asked for by the install program, hook it up and finish the install.

Certainly it *does*.

Then you haven't installed it correctly. Exactly how did you do the
software part of the installation?

No.

No workaround is needed. Many thousand or millions of people have done
this successfully.

Re: First Vista Printer USB or Local?

First I read the manual ;-))
It said: hook up keybooard, mouse, speakers, Printer on USB, Monitor and start your new machine.

It did that and the machine performs excellently.
The printer is recognized correctly by name in Device Manager but does not show up in Printermenu.
It makes dingdong sound when dis/connected.
All I see in Printers are Microsoft Office Writer? MS XPS Document Writer? One Note?
Using Add Printer does not work as nowhere I find my Lexmark to attach.

How to proceed?

The printer is properly recognized by its name in Device Manager under Other devices.

Re: First Vista Printer USB or Local?

Hi,

Maybe it's not a good news, but I have to tell you.

Is this your printer - Lexmark Z23?

http://downloads.lexmark.com/cgi-perl/downloads.cgi?ccs=229:1:0:285:0:0

If so, it does't have a Vista driver, and I doubt it will have since it is
said to be discountinued.

These are models compatible with Vista:

Re: First Vista Printer USB or Local?

If it is in other devices you haven't installed the driver correctly. Uninstall any attempt you made at installing the driver (add/remove programs). Re-check the manual for USB instructions. I have had 4 Lexmark's (thought not one at present) and you have to run the install program without the USB printer connected, connecting it when requested during the driver install portion.
If you don't want to do it the easy way, you can go into control panel /printers/add a printer and do it from there (manually)

Thank you,

Yes, it is a Lexmark Z23.

How come it is correctly recognized in Device Manager as a Z23-Z33 (series) Printer though not functioning through Printer Setup??

In order to be recognized as the correct printer there surely must be a compatible driver, or not?

Curious

Re: First Vista Printer USB or Local?

It would appear that you need to either get someone to help you set up your
current printer or buy one with Vista drivers (and make sure it has the X86
or X64 drivers that match your os {X86, I hope})

Re: First Vista Printer USB or Local?

I feel the pain but that happened to my HP 2610 as well until HP came out
Vista driver for it (but still required a few tweaks).

Rant: 12 years after the introduction of Plug and Play, we still can't make
simple things like this as smoothly as possible. Software still blames
hardware, and vice versa, and we are still living in DOS era as far as for
the plug & play concept goes.

Sorry but you have little alternatives other than following John Barnes's
advise.

Good luck.

Re: First Vista Printer USB or Local? - SOLVED -

Just discovered Vista's Troubleshooting Centre Problems/Solutions etc.
Very helpful feature; I will look there next time ;-))

It reports 'having recognized a Lexmark Z23 etc. printer, though cannot find a suitable driver.'
Probleem met handtekening

Naam van probleemgebeurtenis: PnPDriverNotFound

Architectuur: x86

Hardware-id: USBPRINT\LexmarkLexmark_Z23-Z7FE8

Versie van besturingssysteem: 6.0.6000.2.0.0.768.3

Landinstelling-id: 1043

Cute!
So Vista 'reads' the device properties, shows them in Device manager and made me assume it therefore had to have the driver too. Wrong.

xfile posted that unfortunately there is no Vista compatible Z23 driver available...
I will do some testing and probably hook up another printer.

Thanks all for your contributions.
Learning every day...
Maria

Ken,
I'm an IT Professional of 20 years and have done everything right by the
manual but can't get Vista to recognize my printer, so I would venture to say
that thousands or millions of people are also experiencing problems. Remember
the little bug that killed USBs when upgrading from XP to XP professional?
I'm only glad that Microsoft acknowledges it's bugs more esily than you do!

Re: First Vista Printer USB or Local?

If a USB printer could not be connected, and used, under Vista you would
hear a general howling - and it would be on every news station and on every
web site. You don't hear or see this this, do you?

You have done something wrong as an IT professional of 20+ years. As said IT
professional of 20+ years, you should know to uninstall the printer
software, disconnect the printer, reboot - and start again - reading the
help file this time.
