Vista has corrupted 30% of all of my JPG files

My HD crashed last week on my old PC. I was not too worried about it since I
had been backing all pictures up to an external USB drive. Bought a new HP
PC with Vista Home Premium. Now when I view JPG files from the external
drive they appear with lines in them and are all jumbled up. Not all files,
but about 30% of them are like this.

Is not...
program -- tried IRfanview, Xnview, many others
memory card (SD) - tried several
camera - tried at least 3
method of download - tried USB and SD card direct in PC memory reader

Even when I put the Ext. drive on an XP laptop, the images all appear the
same now. I have copied and pasted to another drive in the same PC and even
other PCs and no difference.

A few other strange items related... all thumbnails appear okay, but when
opened they are jumbled. Sometimes the files look different - ie. one file
could be jumbled in one program, then okay in another program, sometimes even
in the same program if I log off and back in the files appear different.

I can send copies of the files if anyone is interested. Please help. I am
very concerned that 30% of all photos I have saved the past 9-10 years are
destroyed.

Thanks for your help.

Kris

Just wondering...if the bad files are on
the external USB drive and are corrupted
even when viewed from a different computer...
why do you think Vista corrupted them?

Maybe the originals could be recovered
from the old hard drive?

Re: Vista has corrupted 30% of all of my JPG files

Sounds to me like your drive was damaged and corrupted before you
transferred the .jpg's to the external drive. If you didn't check a few of
the transferred files after you backed them up - you'll never know for
certain.

It would appear that whatever took out your main hard drive also took a shot
at your USB drive too.. I doubt very much that Vista was the culprit..

Typical fanboy response. This question has been repeatedly asked by
many people in the video group. You going to stick with your lame
answer?

Re: Vista has corrupted 30% of all of my JPG files

I think it's Vista b/c even new photos fresh from my camera have this
problem. That takes the external HD out of the equation. The old HD is
fried and nothing can be recovered. I've tried everything and even had the
IT guy at work try his magic, but no luck.

Re: Vista has corrupted 30% of all of my JPG files

The files were not backed up, rather they were copied from my old HD to the
external drive. Also, I do not think it's the external HD because even new
pics from two digital cameras (Sony and Canon) and two SD cards download
direct from the camera to the new PC with this problem.

Re: Vista has corrupted 30% of all of my JPG files

Why is everyone ruling out Vista so quickly. First, the USB drive was not
connected to my old PC when it crashed and burned. Second, even when the USB
is disconnected from the new PC and I download photos direct from a camera (2
kinds) they are corrupt. These are new photos also that I just took today,
not old photos. Also, I formatted both SD cards prior to doing this test.

All responses I have received so far are just defending Vista and stating it
must be something I know it is not. Is this a help forum or an advertising
forum for Vista?

In article <D441FAEA-918E-4767-A1EF-85FA3ED49900@microsoft.com>,
tewkes@discussions.microsoft.com says...

If you have an IT Guy at work, take the camera to him, attach the USB
cable, no need to load any software, copy them to his computer, see if
they are corrupt - if not, burn them to a CD/DVD.

If they are fine at his computer, then go back to your computer,
uninstall any software related to the camera, images, etc... Now,
reboot, and just connect the camera via USB, let the camera be detected,
copy the files to the hard drive, now open them from the hard drive -
are they corrupt?

Have you considered this could be a video card driver problem?

Change your video resolution to 1024x768x16bit color and see if you have
the same problem.

Just read what you have written. Nothing really points to Vista as the
culprit. It would appear, however, that the camea is a different story.
Just where or how were the SD cards formatted? Were they formatted by
the computer or by the camera? Most camera manufacturers, for instance,
recommend that the camera does the formatting of the memory card...just
to mitigate the possibility of corruption. And second, what was the route
from the memory card to the external USB drive? There are just too many
other intervening possibilities that tends to preclude Vista (or any
other OS) at this moment.

Re: Vista has corrupted 30% of all of my JPG files

have u taken pictures today that u tried on another computer first?
if it is vista doing it make sure you can get normal pictures from the
camera on another machine. I wouldnt eliminate vista but becaues this is
the first I ever heard of this issue I surely wouldnt put all the blaim on
it untill you know for sure.
