| Re: Windows Vista product key Are you using the Product Key that cam with the install media? There are different types of each and they are not interchangeable. Look very closely, S-5, B-8, O-0 and others look alike. Have someone else try, sometimes another set of eyes and fingers can get it right. Otherwise post back more details of exactly what you are doing and what you are using. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar http://www.dts-l.org "Pawel" <Pawel@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:8DD86DE3-15FE-462F-B8D7-5988378973C8@microsoft.com... > The Windows Vista Home Premium product kkey you typed is invalid for > activation |

| Re: Windows Vista product key Re-typing will not help. I have re-checked it 10 times and tried at least as many times, I am 100% sure it is a legal copy but it still does not accept they key for some reason. I have heard rumours that Microsoft has some database problems or so which make your product key look invalid even it is bought from shop. So, I cannot use the Microsoft online customer care for free since I havent activated the OS. Well how can I do that if the system claims my product key is invalid? So what on earth should I do to get this working? I'm running Windows Vista Home premium. Is there a contact number where I can solve this problem and if the shop has sold me an illegal copy, what can we do to fix it? It's a bit lame if you buy a brand new laptop with new and shiny Vista and all the cherries on top, thinking this is great, now I'm getting all this and that working... and then face a situtation, your legal copy claims not to be one. All those genuine check stickers and so are ok. C'mon someone? | Re: Windows Vista product key Hi Mage, If it's a brand new laptop and the provided key is not allowed (ie: you cannot even enter it), call the manufacturer so they can provide you with a valid one. If you can enter it but get a message about it already being in use, you need to use the phone activation option. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org My thoughts http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com "Mage" <Mage@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:B8C60DEC-BB49-4C1C-9933-3F3ADD227312@microsoft.com... > > Re-typing will not help. If you call them, you will be greeted by a friendly indian telephone rep that will take you key down and offer you a very long one in return for your trouble. I have a legal copy of Vista that was given to me by Microsoft as a gift and I had problems activating it. After I ran it for 3 months I replaced the firmware on my computer and added 2 new hard disks, 2 more gigs of RAM and it was prompted to activate again. I think the activation process is still not fully cooked, but they are working on it. |

When you call for activation, being an educated consumer is beneficial. Quoted from the MS website: http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/activation_facts.mspx "Mandatory Product Activation Data * The Installation ID is unique to each product and comprises two components: 1. Product ID. Unique to the product key used during installation 2. Hardware hash. Non-unique representation of the PC * The country in which the product is being installed (for Office XP and Office XP family products only)" You are never required to provide any other info in order to get activated. The agent is required to activate you immediately if you phone in and provide only the product ID, hardware hash, and occasionally the country in which the product(s) is being installed! It is none of their business if you made hardware changes, why you are reinstalling, etc and you do not need to answer questions like that. If they give you a hard time, politely remind them of this policy posted on their company's website. If still they persist, request politely to speak to a supervisor and escalate the issue until they give YOU the paying customer the treatment you deserve! -- Priceless quotes in m.p.w.vista.general group: http://protectfreedom.tripod.com/kick.html "Fair use is not merely a nice concept--it is a federal law based on free speech rights under the First Amendment and is a cornerstone of the creativity and innovation that is a hallmark of this country. Consumer rights in the digital age are not frivolous." - Maura Corbett |
