80070005 means "access denied". Windows Update is failing, because it does
not have permisson to something it requires (a file, a registry key, etc).

This is not a common problem. The well-known Windows Update errors are
described here: http://support.microsoft.com/ph/6527/

Maybe you can try to run Windows Update as Administrator. Go to Start menu,
All Programs, find "Windows Update" in list of items, right-click it and
choose "Run as Administrator".

If you still get the 80070005 error when running as Administrator, then
something unusual has happened to your installation of Vista. Make sure the
Windows Update service is logging on as "Local System" account (under
Administrative Tools, Services, Windows Update). After that ... sorry, I
dunno. Probbaly just a minor teak needed to fix the error, but it is very
hard to diagnose via a newsgroup. See if you can find a skilled computer
technician nearby to examine the machine for you.

Hope it helps a bit.

I had an after-thought. If Update continues to fail with aan 0x80070005
error, look at the file C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log. It is a plain text
file, you can open it with Notepad. Go to the bottom of the file and look
for "Access Denied" or similar errors. This may give you a more exact idea
what object cannot be accessed, and why.
