| Software Uninstall/reinstall problem Software: Belkin Nostromo N52 Gaming Pad Driver & Software Install File Name: Nostromo_v3d OS: Vista x86 (Yes... retail purchase and authenticated) 1.) I installed the software, and it did not perform properly in Vista. 2.) I attempted to uninstall via Control panel 3.) RESULT: BLUESCREEN (BAD_POOL_HEADER) 4.) I consulted the vendor, and they suggested an uninstall/reinstall (brilliant folks). 5.) I did attempt another unistall. RESULT: BLUESCREEN (BAD_POOL_HEADER) 6.) I attempted to reinstall over the prior install. 7.) The installation package said "There is a prior install in progress. Do you want to remove that install?" 8.) I said, "YES!" (and clicked the appropriate button.) 9.) RESULT: BLUESCREEN (BAD_POOL_HEADER) So, I cannot UNINSTALL. I cannot REINSTALL So, I thought, I will manually delete this bugger, then clean up the after-effects late. PROBLEM: All files int he install folder are "in use" and cannot be deleted. Can't uninstall. Can't reinstall. Can't delete. Vendor says: "Not our problem. Must be a Vista issue." (Man, am I about sick of people blaming their problems on Vista.) Any help out here? Scott |

If this doesn't resolve the issue, try uninstalling or installing and uninstalling in Safe Mode; boot the system, start tapping F8, at the menu choose Safe Mode. Now to the real question, is this software Vista Compatible or did you simply install the software that came with the device which you had installed in XP? Before installing, did you check hardware manufacturer's website for updates, Vista compatible software for the device and/or did you check to see if the device, software, drivers, etc. were indeed compatible with Vista? All of this is important and you may not be able to remove this software without formatting and starting over unless you have an image of your setup prior to the installation. -- Michael Solomon Backup is a PC user's best friend DTS-L.Org: http://www.dts-l.org/ |

| Re: Software Uninstall/reinstall problem Michael -- The software claimed to be Vista-ready - so take that for what it is worth. It seems that somehow it got stuck in the install and has never told Vista it is not installing any longer. But, my knowledge of such things is minimal. As a bonus, there is no uninstaller built-in with the software, so I cannot use that file. And in Safe Mode, it apprears that Vista disables the Windows Installer Service, so i cannot uninstall anything anyway. It said - basically - to uninstalll, restart no longer in safe mode. *sigh* Mondays! This restores the registry and system settings back to a given point in time though you should be sure to back up your data ahead of time. Unfortunately, we go through this in the early stages of an OS. Late last year, my printer died so I purchased an HP Laserjet 1018 printer that claimed to be Vista Ready. while the HP site states they are working on Vista drivers for this printer (early on they said the drivers would be certified by July), to date, there are no drivers and the printer, sits covered in a corner. Fortunately, I saw a deal on a multifunction inkjet, networkable no less, that was Vista compatible and for which Vista drivers and software existed when I purchased it or I would still be without any printer for Vista. Moral of the story; there apparently is a difference between "Ready" and "Compatible.":-) Here's a couple of other things you can try but before you do so, be sure your data is well backed up. You can try using Vista's repair option; boot from the Vista disk, at the setup screen choose repair. If that doesn't resolve it, try installing Vista over itself, known as an in-place install. If those fail, not much left except to reformat and start over. Good luck. -- Michael Solomon Backup is a PC user's best friend DTS-L.Org: http://www.dts-l.org/ |

| Re: Software Uninstall/reinstall problem Michael -- You will never guess what was able to unlock this darn install... Windows Update Advisor. Of all the dumb luck... I had already put my Vista DVD in the drive to reinstall, when just out of sheer curiosity, I clicked the update advisor, downloaded it and ran it. It said "Nostromo installation is suspended. Would you like to cancel and roll back that install?" When I said YES, it did just that. Clean as a whistle. I could then uninstall it. Thanks for all the help though! Thanks to Peter too for the reply up above! Scott |

I never would have thought of that but it's one more option we can suggest to others who may go through the same thing. -- Michael Solomon Backup is a PC user's best friend DTS-L.Org: http://www.dts-l.org/ |
