Good Afternoon,
I am somewhat beyond frustrated with this quirk in my new Vista install and
am hoping that someone can assist me in getting around this issue. I
recently upgraded my machine to Vista Business and have experienced extremely
slow start ups. I have reviewed every posting that I can find concering this
issue but nothing helps, Does anyone have any ideas that could assist me with
this issue. My machine specs are below:

Processor T7200
Ram 2.0 GB
ATI X1400 Video Card (128 MB)
Paging file controlled by Windows
AV Suite: McAfee
HD SATA
Most Current BIOS Version
Defragged using Windows Defragger and then later Diskeeper

Note: This machine ran extremely fast under XPP, I was hoping to get more
bang for the buck. Once you get past the 3-4 minute start up, Vista runs
fine except the hard drive is almost continuously cranking. Strange, I say...
I have verified that I do not have extra stuff running like indexer or WDS
but I have noticed that SVCHOST.EXE is using plenty of memory. I have also
been to the "Performance Information and Tools applet"

I update from XP pro to Vista Ultimate and vista take more time to start up,
you should do a clean install but Vista equal get more time to start compared
to XP, think for this thing they replace the shut down with the hibernate. I
hope they fix this in SP 1, ....

hello steel. its a strange one this but 3 to 4 mins is a long start up,do you
have a dual core prossersor? you probarbly do but you could try donwnloading
tweak iv for windows vista as it could be of some help to you the only
program at the moment with full vista support,run a scan with it and see.

After the upgrade or clean install you should verify your drivers, this could
be a reason, this should be updated, and if this don't work, wait for SP1...

I noticed the same, the problem is that I bought this laptop with XPP and
received a non charge upgrade CD for Vista. Perhaps looking into a new clean
install might be the answer. I was kind of hoping to find a way to tweak
things ang get them working better. Especially since nce you're in Windows,
things fly.

Hi arcadegoal,

Thanks for your response. Yes, I am running a core 2 duo processor which is
why I've been somewhat disappointed with this speed issue. The Tweak for
Vista that you pointed out, Is it similar to the XP powertools or tweak
tools? Do you happen to have a web site for it or is it better to search in
MS's site?

I would be inclined to suspect mcafee.
it is not really vista compatible.
try avg FREE or avast FREE instead.
both run GREAT on vista.

edition you can download more plugins for it if you subscribe as you will
see,just one thing when you enter your name after your e.mail address type in
the name section SKIP IN CAPS ok and you will be able to register it might
not be the solution to your problemb but it is a usefull tool who knows it

From what I've seen around, McAfee might be the cause of the problem.. I use
Avast free and my boot time is 30-45 seconds (faster than XP)... I'm using
Ultimate 32bit.

btw, Avast webshield has a delay of 3 seconds for each link navigation you
do on the internet at the moment.. they're working on a solution. (unless
it's only on MY system ;/)

to test.. disable your network connection (rihgt click on the icon in the
talkbar, then select disable) -- you'll be able to reenable it when you feel
ready for it.

Once disabled, start MSConfig (or AutoRuns or any other software you use) to
unselect the AV programs that boot up with Vista and compare the speed of the
boot.

try using a readyboost flash drive, i used one in my pc until i upgraded
to 4gb of ram now i dont need it. 2gb flash drive should be sufficient
for a cache it will help your boot times noticably.

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Thanks for all of your assistance. The other night while
troubleshooting I decided to look in a different direction, at something I
hadn't thought of. Just then it clicked, "User profiles". Pre-migration my
user profile was sizeable (2 Gb), After the migration for whatever reason, it
was now 4.5 GB. After I deleted the offending profile, my machine began to
perform like it should (super fast -similar to my xpp speed). I'd recommend
anyone else experincing the slowness upon bootup or shutdown, check the
profile size and delete it if neccessary. Once you do, I think you might be
pleasantly surprised.
