What kind of files? Word-processing documents?
Will the file not open at all? Or does it open into gibberish?

It will depend more on the particular program(s) that you're using to do
your work on each machine, than on the operating systems.

Those particular programs would need to be installed on each computer, and
preferably also the same versions.

It doesn't matter if your school machine runs XP and your home machine
runs Vista. What matters is in what program you created the files. You
need to have the same - or a compatible - program on both machines. IOW,
if you are creating documents in MS Word 2003 at school, you need to
have MS Word 2003 or 2007 or a program that can read MS Word 2003 files
installed on the machine at home.

If you need more help, post back with more information such as in what
program(s) you are creating the work at school.

The issue here has nothing to do with Vista vs. XP, but with what
application program the files are created in and what application
programs are installed on the school computer. You need to have the
same (or compatible) program to open them as the one they were created
with.

So, to start, tell us what program or programs (including *version*
numbers--please don't just say "Word" but say "Word 2007," or "Word
2003," or whatever) you are using to create the files you want to open
at school. Then tell us exactly what happens when you try to open them
at school, including the exact verbatim text of any messages you may
get.
