To deal with binary newsgroups you might want to consider getting a better newsreader, Windows Mail is an improvement over Outlook Express but still has many limitations and shortcomings one being an inability to decode yEnc encoded files which are very common in binary news groups. -- XS11E, Killing all posts from Google Groups The Usenet Improvement Project: http://blinkynet.net/comp/uip5.html |

These will typically have "binaries" in their name. Many news servers don't serve up binary newsgroups at all. If you still can't see the binary files in a binary newsgroup then it's an issue with your news reader and not a Vista issue as such. Are you sure that you are looking in binary-enabled newsgroups? -- And loving it, -Q _________________________________________________ Qu0llSixFour******.com (Replace the "SixFour" with numbers to email me) |

While that was the original intent years ago, with well in excess of 130,000 different newsgroups now in existence people for various reasons post binaries to groups that don't have binaries in their name. The REASON you may not see binaries in so-called misnamed "text" groups is the news service provider is simply blocking them. That's the only reason. They do this since binaries take up way more space then simple little text files and of course most providers are simply too **** cheap to buy enough storage. To "see" a image or binary file several things need to happen. First, nearly all images posted to newsgroups are encoded. Unless you use a news reader that can automatically DECODE the file you won't see anything in the way of picture. On top of that many images today are encoded to yEnc which is a special form of compression to reduce a file's size. Not all news readers support yEnc, so even if they can decode a normal image, they may not be able to decode a yEnc format. Third many images are sent in pieces. Such 1 of 2, 2 of 2. If so, again if your newsreader doesn't automatically convert them (most can) then you have to do that step in another application. Depending on which news reader you're using you may need to tell it which type of images to decode or which of your applications to use to display the decoded file as a image. Not all news readers do this automatically. Now that you understand the basics. The process should work something like this: 1. Go to any newsgroup you KNOW has images posted to it. 2. Do whatever you need to retrieve new headers. 3. Find the command that says launch attachment or some similar command. This will get the body associated with the header which simply describe the content of the file. 4. In a few seconds time IF your news reader is capable of decoding the file you picked, typically a jpeg it should by itself launch a viewer and you should see the image. When you configure your news reader you need to specify WHERE on your computer you wish to store any downloaded images. The decoded files will get placed here and they will be just like any other image of a similar type. Cautions: Some news readers like Agent will decode the image and display it but will not automatically save it unless configured to. Most news reader will change the icon to something difference once the image is decoded. For example Agent creates a yellow icon to indicate a image has been decoded and shows a green icon if the image as also been automatically saved to the folder you specified. It is common for malicious people to post Trojans to graphic newsgroups, so be sure you have some protection like a anti-virus scanner that automatically scans downloads. Best advice if you using any build in Windows crap as your news reader, dump it. Nearly anything you can try is far better. |

| Re: How can i get my computer to see images in newsgroups If you mean text as opposed to HTML messages, not many people post to newsgroups using HTML. In Windows Mail you can check to see if the "Read all messages in plain text" option is enabled. Go to Tools/Options/Read Tab and chack that option. -- Ronnie Vernon Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User "Al Pacca" <alpacca@edenet.nl> wrote in message news:7024F3D9-9037-4463-8213-07E614404AD0@microsoft.com... >I only get to see textmessages in newsgroups, and i would like to see >photo's and or files........... > Can anyone explain me how to make this happen?? > (for the general idea, i am a NoOb) |

| Re: How can i get my computer to see images in newsgroups > Excuse me, but they *are* text only. No you are wrong. This newsgroup as well as all Microsoft ones whether they are on the msnews server or mirrored another server are not text only if the mirror server does not strip it. Microsoft has allowed the posting of attachments and html posts, but they don't advertise it and do not encourage it because some people cannot read the attachments for various reasons. Also some news servers are only text based, thus they would strip down the posts. You can read more here, but generally this is all over the internet if you know where to look. Remember, these groups are >carried on other servers as well as Microsoft's servers so general >newsgroup rules apply. Usenet HAS NO RULES. Try again. The one minor exception is in the handful of moderated newsgroups. This isn't one of those and they number at best a few dozen out of roughly 150,0000 total newsgroups. >> people can use them to post images of screenshots or other small >> files > >But they shouldn't and are usually told not to do so. They shouldn't because you say so? Thanks for the laugh. > >> although I personally prefer to upload images to a web service and >> post the link > >That's the correct way. If there are no "rules" and I just told you there aren't, there can't be any right or wrong way, rather several dumbass wannabe net cops that think they can enforce THEIR rules and attempt to pretend they are in charge, which I'm guessing gets them off on some senseless ego trip or something. I think most already know what I think of those kind of Bozos. |
