Hi all

Amazing that MS took so long to present Dreamscene. This was possibile
since the days of windows 98 acitve desktop. So if you want it in
Win98 or Win2k then its quite possible. All you had to do was edit the
active desktop html and put the video of your choice in it and it
would show fullscreen in the background. Obviously the shorter the
video the better and one that looped well was a bonus. I had a couple
of favourite rendered ones that worked really well. Still have them
somewhere. Might upload em somewhere although they looked better on
smaller screens of yester year.. Used to install it/customise it for
some clients. .
I always wondered why nobody presented windows 98/2k this way as a
display tool. Perhaps no one new it could be done? You could have
video running as the desktop background and have video on media player
in the foreground. Looked really cool in those days.

a video on the desktop sure.........I think I even had a video desktop
at once.

But there is more to Vista's ability then to show a video as a desktop.

It's tough to find an unbiased article on any OS but I think this one
does a good job. It's an interesting read and I am in no way saying it
is 100% accurate....for every web artilce that says "Ying" you can
find one that says "Yang"....the best thing to do is read them both
and make your own conclusions.

I can't think of anything in Vista more pointless than Dreamscene.
I would much rather they channel their expertise towards *useful* features.

I agree. What do people do sit in front of their PC's and stare at the
desktop? About the only time I see mine is when I boot up or shutdown.
I don't really care what it looks like.

there were also programs that could ad video or even your screensaver as a
wallpaper.. fully animated.. you can also do this with winamps
visualizations.

Heck I was doing things like that with win95 with the active desktop from
ie4 lol

however Vista renders all this on the GPU ..
although this is what vista claims, people do see increase in CPU use with
the anim desktop enabled

Perhaps most people use their computers for something more than
starting at the desktop, and therefore weren't interested in such a
useless "feature?"

you can use that as a mediation - relaxing tool..

staring at blocks while the computer is performing an actual function gives
purpose to the graphics...

you stare.. you relax, and when its finished you are refreshed :-)

IMHO, it can't be more senseless than screensavers. Yet people spend
millions of $$ to have their PCs look really neat - when they're not
using/looking at them!

While I spent a bit of time picking out a nice desktop graphic for my PC,
it's kind of like: Start computer... oh, that's a neat picture (B-58 hustler
flying low)... now, let's cover it up with all kinds of other windows.

If I want a neat screen with movies/movement to look at, I'll turn on the
TV. In fact, I think I'll go do that now! ;-)

What is one person's uesless add-on is another's essential feature. I
for one have my system on much of the time doing background
processing. Why should I just have the system sittin g there with some
bland, "mindless" UI staring out?
