I cannot get rid of black boxes replacing folder icons in windows explorer
and also have overlaying black boxes on part of the icon on my desktop. What
can I do to get rid of these black boxes and get the original icons restored.
Rebooting has not helped or changing Display settings.

What did you install to remove the shortcut arrows?

Michael,
I did not install anything. What happened was I was using Remote Desktop
and when I came back to my PC and logged back in, the whole screen was black
and could see nothing. I had to log off, then reboot and after the reboot, I
have three icons on my desktop with black boxes on them. I tried to replace
the icon, but did not work. I also go into Windows Explorer and all my
folder icons are black boxes, not folders. I have rebooted and have also
tried changing display settings to no avail.

I don't know, sorry. Use a System Restore point before you
used Remote Desktop.
