| Desktop.ini files showing on the desktop I have turned on Show hidden files and folders and two icons for "desktop ..ini" are now showing on the desktop. One comes from User\Public\Desktop, the other is User\<user profile>\Desktop. Windows XP always managed to keep them hidden. Any ideas how to hide them whilst keeping other hidden files and folder visible? |

| Re: Desktop.ini files showing on the desktop Can't be done. If you want hidden and system files shown, ALL hidden and system files will be shown including these two. -- Richard G. | Re: Desktop.ini files showing on the desktop No. With the hidden files it's either all or none. -- Dustin Harper dharper@vistarip.com http://www.vistarip.com -- "M" <spamtrap@spambouncer.org> wrote in message news:OndTNtgpHHA.4872@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... >I have turned on Show hidden files and folders and two icons for "desktop >.ini" are now showing on the desktop. | Re: Desktop.ini files showing on the desktop You beat me to it. I've been deleting them for months and haven't had to restore one yet. | Re: Desktop.ini files showing on the desktop So to sum up all people here said, you probably won't see the .ini if you disable viewing of system files. If you set Windoze to show both system and hidden files - you will see the .ini. -- «Kono kuni wa mada, honto no hero wo shiranai» TacticalSniper http://tacticalsniper.blogspot.com/ |

| Re: Desktop.ini files showing on the desktop This response certainly sounds unhelpful, not to mention a bit rude. If I understand the intended message correctly, should one accept that the only way to "fix" something is by giving up and not trying to do it? As for hiding the desktop.ini file in the desktop, you can in fact do it. Maybe you can't make it not "be there", but you can make it appear invisible (i.e., while still having hidden and superhidden files show up in your explorer). Here's how I do it: 1) Assign a blank (transparent) default icon to .ini files (inifiles on the registry). 2) If you have "show extensions" enabled, you need to add a value in the registry to not show the extensions only for .ini files (NeverShowExt). 3) Finally, use a free program such as iconoid to make the text of your desktop icons be the same color as you desktop's background (assuming you are using a solid color, but if you are annoyed by desktop.ini files showing (as am I), you probably don't have a full color picture of your baby niece as your background either  ) Note that none of your other desktop icons would show their text either, but that's only an added bonus in my book... At least now I don't have to Alt-255 them into oblivion... Good luck!
You KNOW why they are now showing. You can always temporarily expose them if you need to. Try working with Vista instead of against it. -- Chris Game "I don't know why I did it, I don't know why I enjoyed it, and I don't know why I'll do it again." -- Bart Simpson |

| Re: Desktop.ini files showing on the desktop Or you could right click on the desktop, go to view and uncheck "show desktop icons". You can put the icons that you use regularly in the quicklaunch toolbar, and turn "show desktop icons" on and off when you want to see the rest of them. |
