Re: UNBELIEVABLE! Have lost all my data--held hostage for $$$

Please be certain you know how to properly "use" the anytime upgrade and
that you back it up (in other words - copy the ****ed thing) to multiple
different media. This can be DVD's, external USB drives, a network drive -
whatever.

Don't come back here whining when you lose the upgrade because you have to
reinstall your operating system - and you find that you can't locate/use a
defective backup of the anytime upgrade. Back it up and test the backup to
be certain it is competent.

Re: UNBELIEVABLE! Have lost all my data--held hostage for $$$

Thank you for the replies, Richard. The beta pitfalls of Glitcy
Programming, imo, do not extend to the end-phase directions to all RC
users--Defective, misleading instructions furnished by the very makers of the
product they know inside and out.

That is to say, and I am not whining but NOTING: the instructions to users
even at the end of the testing program, were and are completely wrong.

Here's how simple it is: "IF you are an RC user, you are in RC Ultimate.
You will not be able to migrate your programs, settings, data to any other
Vista version other than Vista Ultimate."

And, sir, they did not say that. They said the opposite. And this failing
is not a failing of arcane, buggy software. It was and is a complete failure
of responsible communications.

It was and is a brick wall a mile wide and tall, fully in their view,
which they chose NOT to warn users about. Why?

This is not a whine, it is an observation of egregious sin of Microsoft's
doing.

WARNING TO RC USERS planning to upgrade and in need of a clean install:
your "totalbackup" disks are only usable if you buy Ultimate.

And that is true. I've just given a useful lesson in payback for the lesson
I have learned the hard way: MS lies outright. Apologists will ignore the
basic fact that the MS official flacks are sloppy or outright disingenous in
this case. I speak of the official mouthpieces, the hirelings. I'm not
slapping any MS user/defenders.
On the contrary, I thank you for being frank and for offering rebuttals
against all common sense.

Re: UNBELIEVABLE! Have lost all my data--held hostage for $$$

well, i didnt thought too much about it, but, if the backups are on dvd or
another hard drive, you can get back your data if:
1.- install virtual pc or vmware
2.- install the rc1 into a virtual machine, same edition from where you made
the backup (ultimate)
3.- ensure the virtual machine sees the backup media and try to restore the
backup into the virtual machine
4.- move your data from the virtual machine to your real machine, either by
net, additions or whatever you want to use :-)

as it is timebombed, try to set the virtual machine date to before june and
cut out its internet connection, that (probably) will give you enough room
and time to do your things

on a sidenote, i didnt tried to do this, but if your backup media gets seen
to the virtual machine, it should work flawlessly, i think

Set up a Virtual Machine (VMware ought to work, not sure about Virtual PC
2007 and Vista basic).

Install a _trial_ version of Vista Ultimate in the virtual machine.
Restore backup in virtual machine
Transfer data to the real machine from the virtual machine.
Make sure you've got everything then delete \ uninstall the virtual machine.
Pour yourself a drink of whatever your favourate beverage is for a victory
sip. You've earned it.

Re: UNBELIEVABLE! Have lost all my data--held hostage for $$$

Kudos! Thank you, Robert, for such positive and creative thinking.
Because I am a dummy (this is the first time for me to hear about VM), and
because my track record with even simple installations is not too good, I
probably should just bite the weenie they want me to eat, and pay for the
upgrade. That will be a moral defeat, sure, but it is promised by "Anytime
Upgrade" to be super EZ and safe.

Really though, if I buy the upgrade key for $199 from Amazon, that's a 100kb
download, and there, it's done. Microsoft makes no mention of any
possibility of loss of the license key or possibility of failure. Microsoft
leads me to want to believe that they never gloss or oversimplify prospects,
in order, I guess to brighten their primrose path. Maybe I should trust them
again, inasmuch as their gun is at my head.

To be very sure, however =I only need to know now=, that IF I upgrade this
present "clean install" of Basic, to Ultimate,

then can I for sure for sure for sure! regain my former files, programs,
settings of the RC1 installation?
Thanks!

Robert, I am a poet-type of comic fool. In appreciation for your aid and
positive thinking... Virtual Machine? Hard to believe, but I never heard of
"VM" stuff before now. You fire my imagination. You get for a gift, what
used to be called an "ode".
And although humorous, the appreciation extended to you is genuine:

I would lay a laurel
at your VM feet

and if I had some VM hands

Jume, thank you very much for your time in sharing a good idea.
See Robert Moir's input--similar to your idea--I am gonna knuckle under and
pay for the upgrade key.

Everyone agrees (?) that if I do that, I can restore my date from the RC1's
totalbackup disk set?

Thank you sir, for your help.

Yessir, it seems that way. Who would've presumed that before this
revelation, that a Windows system would no longer allow backups from disks
unless you had paid maximum $?

I raise a cup of red I bleed to toast your Blue and Gold champs.
Wish best wishes, may your Cal Bears never go up against the Microsoft

LOL Exactly! He has posted the link several times as evidence of the so
called lie, and sadly I wonder if he really actually read it. If they
really wanted you to use the actual built in backup, I believe they
would have clearly stated that, and reminded you of what would be needed
in order to use that backup later on. Sheesh, not only that, but clearly
at the bottom of the page it states that the user will be granted 2 hour
sessions, (Logins), for data retrieval for a limited amount of time. So
I suggest that Mr Lowered Expectations get very busy right away and USE
the granted 2 hour sessions before THAT time runs out! (Rather than
ranting and ravening here) So get to it buddy! ...Before you REALLY
loose it all!

Cheers

Is it even possible to install the trial at this date, given that it had an
expiration date? Sure, you could change the date on your computer to "fool"
the installation software. But I don't recall if the installation has to
connect with Microsoft before it's fully functional.

There are folks 10 times as knowledgeable on this issue than I am. But until
one of them answers, let me raise a caution flag. You backed up your data
using the backup software on a TRIAL version of an OS. It was probably very
close to what was finally released to market. But if there were any issues
with the backup software that were later fixed when OS was released (and/or
through later updates), then I suppose it is conceivable that the data you
backed up could be incompatible with the final version of Vista Ultimate.
In my not-completely-informed opinion, I'd say that's highly unlikely, but
since you're looking for a definitive answer, I thought I'd let you know.

BTW: You mentioned something about $199 for the download from Amazon. When I
bought Vista Ultimate 64-bit, I got the OEM version for that price from New
Egg. You might consider that. You would actually have the media in hand
rather than having to do a download. And depending on how you bought Vista
Basic, you might be able to sell the Basic to someone else, or install it on
another computer.
If you don't want 64-bit, I don't recall if the 32-bit Ultimate OEM was
cheaper or not.

And next time you are asked to back up data, do that.. creating an image is
not the same as backing up data..

You have posted the link several times as evidence of the so called lie, and
sadly I wonder if you really actually read it. If they really wanted you to
use the actual built in backup, I believe they would have clearly stated
that, and reminded you of what would be needed in order to use that backup
later on. It merely stated to be sure to back up your DATA. Sheesh, not only
that, but clearly at the bottom of the page under "Additional Information"
it states that the user will be granted 2 hour sessions, (Logins), for data
retrieval for a limited amount of time. So I suggest that Mr Lowered
Expectations get very busy right away and USE the granted 2 hour sessions
before THAT time runs out too! (Rather than ranting and ravening here) So
get to it buddy! ...Before you REALLY loose it all! (Or have a heck of a
time getting it back)

Cheers

You did post the above which I pasted\copied .What do you think it means ?? It means that the version that you need to purchase to Upgrade your RC1 has to be the same version as your RC1 or higher in the same language that you had as the Beta,

Home Basic does not apply to the above since it is a lower version than your RC1.

It is in Black and White which you did not understand

The sentence quoted has nothing to do with Basic, Home, Utimate, or
Business.

In black and white it says '...must be the same language version', which
indicates it must be an English version to replace and English version,
Spanish for Spanish, etc.
