In windows Xp I would have to change the following setting to launch Office
files in a separate window when using Internet Explorer.


To configure Internet Explorer to open Office files in the appropriate
Office program by using the Folder Options tool: 1. Open My Computer.
2. On the Tools menu (or the View menu), click Folder Options (or click
Options).
3. Click the File Types tab.
4. In the Registered file types list, click the specific Office document
type (for example, Microsoft Excel Worksheet), and then click Advanced (or
click Edit).
5. In the Edit File Type dialog box, click to clear the Browse in same
window check box (or click to clear the Open Web documents in place check
box).
6. Click OK.

Where is the "Browse in same window" equivalent in Windows Vista.

Unfortunately, the File Types dialog is discontinued in Vista.

To re-iterate Billybob's question:
How do we change the "Browse in same window" in Windows Vista?

I've got 3 users logging in the same Vista PC. For one of them, Excel 2003
opens in the same window and for the two others, Excel opens in another
window. Nobody changed registry entries or used third party software to
change settings.

How does Microsoft expect users to make this little change without going to
third party or use the Registry Editor?

BTW, the "Browse in same window" = false should have been the default in the
first place. The first thing we do on a new computer is to turn that off.

I did not say anything about "file associations". I was only saying that the "File Types" dialog which is used to configure the "Browse in same window" setting in Windows XP, is discontinued in Windows Vista. And the only option seems to be a direct registry edit (See article KB162059), unless the corresponding applications provide that option in their UI. Don't know if Office 2007 provides this option within the UI.

That's a question to Microsoft. However, I certainly agree to this point.
