"Windows Explorer has stopped working" - Why?

Hey everyone

I get the message "Windows Explorer has stopped working" every time I try to
access a folder. To start with it happened occasionally, but now it's
constant.

It's really starting to annoy me.

Any ideas on how I could resolve it before I smash my laptop to pieces?

Thanks

Greg

Does the problem/fault only appear when using Explorer ? If so then it's
possible you have a issue with a Shell Extension. Third party apps add
them to give you Right Click features such as "Scan with..." or "Burn to
CD" and those type operations.
You may want to download a program called Shell Ext Viewer to help
you see what extensions have been added to your system.

*Smashing a PC is over kill - a good cussing out is more than enough.
All PC's have Microphone inputs and hear very well.

I too have been wrestling with this problem for 2 days, my laptop nearly
went through the window as well, and as for Vista???!
I believe the problem is caused by software you may of downloaded along with
virus protection applications, Trojan horse in there somewhere.
Uninstall all software from a date when the computer was stable, and see if
that works, did for me. Use Control Panel/Progs & features for the uninstall
process.
email me if you succeed, same if you don't!
Regards
Stu

RE: "Windows Explorer has stopped working" - Why?

I had the same problem. I have a workaround if System Restore fails to
correct this. For me, It even occured in Safe Mode.
1. Make your way to starting Internet Explorer
2. on the address bar type:"control panel"
3. go to User Accounts...-> Add User account-> Create New "Admininstrator"
Account.
4. Shut down manually if you have to and reboot and access the new Admin
account
You will now have new account with all original programs still installed and
access to old files via either:
a. Internet exporer-> Address bar-> type: C:\users\ your old user account name
b Start button-> computer-> C:\Users\ you old user account name.

* You'll find here folders which will contain you old docs, downloads, etc
from you old account.

Thanks,
