Home network - Printer access denied from Vista PC to XP PC

I have a Laptop with Vista and connection to an XP(he) workstation via a
wireless router. I have shared the XP's "my documents" folder and can write
and save to it. I've shared the printer, added the Vista user to the XP
system, and when trying to add the printer to the Vista PC, I get an error
message "Access Denied".

Note. I can see the printer via the "add printer wizard." I've turned off
the firewall
settings on the Vista PC.

What can I do to get the Vista PC to connect to the printer connected to the
XP PC?

Thanks.

Bill

I have the same problem with a printer hanging of an XP Home system (assume
your (he) meant Home Edition). Can't print to it from Vista Ulitmate. I get
the same error: access denied. If I hang the same printer off an XP Pro
system I have no problem printing to the printer.

Have you tried adding the printer as a local printer?

Re: Home network - Printer access denied from Vista PC to XP PC

Bill,
I was having the same problem, and I found a solution on another site. It worked!!! :)

Karen (my port name was \\heather\heatherhp)

Go to Control Panel. Choose printer. Then choose Add Printer.

ChooseAdd a local printer. Click on Create a new port. The default in the drop down box is Local Port. Do not change that. Click Next.

A dialogue box will appear asking for you to enter a port name. Type in the \\computer name\printer name ie. My computer's name is basement and the printer name is EpsonSty so I typed in \\basement\epsonsty

Re: Home network - Printer access denied from Vista PC to XP PC

I've been fighting this problem for days. I tried creating a new port
as suggested above by typing "\\computer name\printer name", but Vista
kept saying the port name was invalid. Finally, I tried it again, but
this time I replaced my computer name with the IP address -
"//192.168.2.3/HPOffice" and IT WORKED!!

Thank you guys! You really helped me get pointed in the right
direction! I hope my post further helps other. I LOVE THIS FORUM!
