I did a full backup (windowsimagebackup) using XP before doing a clean
install of Vista Ultimate 64 bit. When I try to use Vista Restore it says
that I have not yet done a backup. I need to recover my Outlook Contacts
file (*.pst ?) to import into Office Ultimate 2007.

The backup is on a partition in my external drive.

Search the Windows downloads area for a program called
"NtBackup-RestoreUtility".

It is *supposed* to be the tool to use; I hope it runs better for you
than it does me :-\

It always gives me a "This application has failed to start because
NTMSAPI.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this
problem." I've reinstalled half-dozen times and gotten no love.

using the Windows NT Backup Restore Utility.

To turn on Removable Storage Management in Windows Vista


1.. Click the Start button, click Control Panel, click Programs, and then
click Turn Windows Features on or off. If you are prompted for an
administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide
confirmation.
2.. Select the check box next to Removable Storage Management to turn the
feature on, and then click OK.

I am afraid that did not help.

I 'browsed' to the folder that contains the XP backup files but the
NtBackup-Restore utility does not recognize those files. They are 8 small (2
to 17 KB) and 1 moderate (2,031 KB) size XML Document files and 2 large
(484,914 & 47,572,658 KB) VHD files.
They are read-only and occupy a single partition on my external drive that
connects to my system via a FW800 cable and PCI card. The backup is dated
April 18th, 2007.

What good is there in doing a complete backup if you cannot restore it after
installing Vista?

I am now running under the 32-bit version.

You made that backup with Complete PC Backup. You cannot restore individual
files from it. That is designed for restoring the complete image to a bare
drive by booting the Vista DVD, and doing a restore from there.

Annoying but...okay - now I need step by step instructions.

I must copy my D: drive contents to a folder or partition on my external
drive and then restore the XP backup to the D: drive after reformatting
it...correct? How do I do that? The 'copy *.* ' command does not work as it
cancels when it hits any file that cannot be copied such as D: volume info.
Also, is there a way in Vista to make a partition on my external drive in a
non-destructive manner. It now has 3 partitions including the one containing
the XP backup? My external drive is a LaCie TB Firewire.

Of course once the restore is complete then I must search for any copy data
(contacts, etc.) to my C: drive.

By the way, I did the Complete PC Backup before installing Vista because
everything I read said to do exactly that. Was there an option that I missed?

Sorry but I don't know what you are talking about. What D: drive contents?
Restore what XP backup? No, you can't copy system files like that.

See what functionality Disk Management in Vista can give. It can shrink a
partition and create another one out of that now unallocated space, but
Vista's tools in this regard are limited. How much one can get out of
shrinking a partition using Vista's tools or whether it works at all depends
on the location of unmoveable files.

There are 3rd party tools for managing partitions such as Acronis Disk
Director Suite 10 which is Vista compatabile in the lastest build 2160.
Also BootIt NG from Terabyte Unlimited.

I, too, have had no success. I have set Removable Storage Management to ON
and installed NT Backup Restore Utility, but it does not recognise any of the
randomly-selected backup files I have from the last 3 years or so of using
the Backup/Restore program in XP (neither Full nor Differential backups).
What is particularly frustrating is that Vista Help files do not even
acknowledge the existence of the XP utility, which is clearly different from
the NT one.

Can anyone help with this Microsoft oversight?
