There have been multiple reports of disk copy problems with
Vista/Windows Server 2008 (Server Longhorn).
The "Long Goodbye" is The Register's moniker for inexplicably slow file
copying including system hangs.

The "Vanishing Hard Drive" is a bizarre problem in which copying large
amounts of data from one SATA II hard drive to another results in a
system hang and the complete disappearance of any reference to the SATA
drive from which information is being copied. We have repeatedly
encountered this problem with copying of 5+GB of data from one SATA II
drive to another or by using Microsoft's "Backup" application program.

In our experience, the error has been a consistent problem with a SATA
II to SATA II transfer using the on-board controller on an EVGA 680i SLI
motherboard and the Windows Server 2008 operating system. The problem
also occurs with copying of data from an "on-board" controlled SATA
drive to one that is attached to a SIIG PCIe controller. It does not
happen with a copy from a SATA II drive on the on-board controller to
one that is attached by a USB 2.0 connection. This is an interesting
finding because one important difference is that there is a slower data
transfer rate suggesting that a source of the problem may be timing
errors. Changing SATA II drives hasn't corrected the problem nor has
installing the latest BIOS and driver updates. Interestingly, there have
been no copy failures using while running SATA II drives with the same
operating system on a Dell PowerEdge 1800.

The problem appears to be due to some combination of hardware and driver
problems that occur with prolonged, high speed SATA II transfers. The
operating system appears to inappropriately respond to the condition by
completely disconnecting the drive and coming to a dead stop. The drive
can only be re-attached after a cold start.

I assume you did not read the article he is referring to then, that quotes
"Vista" and funnily enough my "Vista" ultimate has experienced a lot of the
issues of the article when it comes to file copying/deleting etc...

yes I am aware of the article about the Long Goodbye ( a Vista issue) BUT
the body of the original poster referred to the vanishing hard drive under
Windows Server 2008.

As an aside I wonder if those experiencing delays in file copy have disabled
both the IPv6 and Windows Differential Compression features as doing so
increases file copy speed.

Thanks for the tip will try that, the thing is why should a user have to
disable 2 features to have there computer perform the basics, surely this
should of been top of the list of things to work before release!!!!

Actually both bits work really well and increase the speed of file transfer
over what you see today IF you are working in an IPv6 environment against
Windows Server 2008 or a 2003 R2 system where you are communicating with the
remote differential compression on both sides of the transfer.

One can only speculate why this is the default setting prior to wide
availability or adoption of both.
Maybe it will just look great when all of a sudden your system goes into
light speed the day your network switches to IPv6 and you rae transferring
files to a Windows Server 2008 file server
