You should not be messing with ANY system file like wpa.dbi or wpa.bak that
is entirely unnecessary and will cause you further problems.
If you PC says it needs to be activated then do so. If the Internet
activation fails then select the option to activate by telephone - the
wizard will give you the number you need and you will eventually after
entering the numbers and it failing again, be able to speak to someone who
will activate your PC for you.

You will be able to re-activate but probably not over the internet. If the
internet option fails then select the telephone option instead.

Don't know where you got that number from, as it's the tech support/TechNet
number. The activation number should start 0800 since activation is free
almost everywhere including the UK.
The correct number should be displayed on the "activate by phone" page when
you select that option.

The OEM versions are tied to the mother board and as such if you are
replacing the mother board your OEM copy is effectively dead with it.
That is why a full OEM is significantly cheaper then full retail product
(which may be reactivated on different hardware over and over again)
As you can see from your end user license agreement the OEM product is tied
to the Licensed Device - which in the case of OEM products is the
motherboard. There is no transfer of this license to any other licensed
device except with that originally installed licensed device.
So it looks like you may be out of luck on this - next time you may wish to
consider buying the Retail version instead.

Re: reactivating vista home premium

Hi Robin,

Reading your post again I can see the reason why. OEM copies are usually
distributed with new computers and are usually 'bound' to that computer
which basically means you cannot use the OEM copy on another PC. 'But'
another PC can also mean the same PC that ha substantial alterations.
Originally you replaced the hard drive - no big deal because you were able
to activate easily enough. However, you then replaced the motherboard,
Processor and Memory which is 'almost' but not quite a completely new PC
which, according to the OEM End user Licence Agreement prohibits you from
activating it again - hence Microsoft, when you telephoned them, telling you
that you cannot activate again.

The previous poster Mike Brannigan, I believe, works for Microsoft and he
would know far more about this than I would. I simply don't know who to put
you in contact with, as you have already spoken to Microsoft customer
support. I can only hope that Mike see this post and responds with a
solution that will get you out of this mess, after all you know have a copy
of vista that, if we stick to the licence agreement, is totally useless to
you. The shop that sold it to you aren't bothered, so long as they get their
profit. I've complained about this before but it always falls on deaf ears.
If OEM copies are meant to be supplied with 'new' computers (as the OEM
states Original Equipment manufacturer) they shouldn't be made available to
the general public. Yes I know they are cheaper to buy but just look at the
trouble they cause in the end. Paying for a retail copy cost more, but is
less hassle.

Lets see if Mike Brannigan can solve your problem or make a suggestion.

Well considering your situation and depending on your needs....you may want
to give www.ubuntu.com a try!

I mean seeing how your Vista disk is only good as a coaster now...whatcha
got to loose?

Your translation of the OP problem is not the same as mine, I'm afraid.

Wouldn't think that when I read the Vista EULA =)

Re: reactivating vista home premium

Hi,

I could be wrong, but go check EULA again and read carefully. Based on my
memory, it says the license is tied to the first "device" it's installed.
However, it has no definitions about what is a "device". In other words, a
device can be anything including a DVD ROM.

If that's the case, you may still use it. Again, it's time to read EULA
again, and see what it says.

Good luck.
