Trouble backing up files

Hi. I am running Windows Vista and have tried backing up my files, however,
to no avail.

I've tried doing the automatic file backup...that is currently set to on.
I've tried backing up the files to a DVD-R, but again, to no avail.

It says, "X, the Last backup did not complete successfully." Backup
location: Recovery (D:)

The details: The backup did not complete successfully. An error occurred.
The following information might help you resolve the error:

There is not enough space to save the backup files. Free up disk space or
change your backup settings. (There's a long # here with the letter x in it)

Backup time: 5/20/2007 8:59 AM
Backup location: Recovery (D:)

I'm not sure what to do to actually 'get' a successful back up...but, any
help would be greatly appreciated. Go easy on the pc lingo as I'm quite the
novice with stuff like this.

Thanks for your time,
Christian
