Documents Menu

Tell me there is a way to remove the Documents menu from Vista's Classic
Start Menu without a tweaking program.
If not can one point me to a tweaking program that will accomplish this.
I've used TweakVI but it has way to many features for me.

Thanks,
James

Re: Documents Menu

Hi James--

Piece of cake. Hit the Windows Key + R--->and in the run box type
"gpedit.msc" without the quotes>Windows settings>Administrative
Templates>Start Menu and Task Bar>Remove Documents Menu from Start Menu.

Should do it for you.

I played with the unpaid Tweak Vista several months ago, and would have to
look at it to see if it does it or the paid version, which means if it does
there is also a regedit for it (I'd have to pull my Honeycutt Win Reg Guide
off the shelf and look and I will later--he hasn't finished his Vista Reg
Guide yet) but I had a hunch you could get it done

Re: Documents Menu

James --

Give the gpedit a try, but I'm not sure if it applies both to the default
Start Menu in Vista and the Classic start menu. The description of this
item is:

"Removes the Documents icon from the Start menu and its submenus.

This setting only removes the icon. It does not prevent the user from using
other methods to gain access to the contents of the Documents folder.

Note: To make changes to this setting effective, you must log off and then
log on."

and I believe if this doesn't work you can try to the reg and get it done
this way:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
You may have to create the new key Explorer
Create a new DWORD:

NoDocsMeun

It may not be possible to remove them from the Classic Start menu. It's
easy to remove them from the default menu because you just right clickt the
start menu>customize> radio button in don't display documents.

Good luck,

CH

Re: Documents Menu

You will have to create the new key "Explorer" (no quotes), and that D_WORD
value should have spelled Menu. Sorry.

Hi,
Try this...
Right-click the Taskbar> Properties> Start menu> Privacy, uncheck "Store and
display a list of recently opened files."

Hope this helps,

Re: Documents Menu

Hi Winston--

According to several directions that have worked, it should be zero, but I
wasn't able to find anything that explicitly said it would remove Documents
on the *Classic menu, however as I said there is a gpedit.msc menu item that
says it will do it. Someone could certainly try both values.

Re: Documents Menu

James--

Did you type it into the run box? Because gpedit.msc works for everyone
else, unless it's the case that your edition of Vista doesn't have it. In
XP it had to be pro. What edition do you have?

On Vista Home Premium x86 "gpedit.msc" isn't available. I know that
it's available on Vista Enterprise x86 & x64. Have a great day.

Whoops,

I told you to create the wrong key!

Instead of NoSMMyDocs, use NoRecentDocsMenu. Everything else is the
same.

Re: Documents Menu

Hello Chad,
Neither have I found anything about the registry key removing the Documents on the Classic Menu.

I posted the zero value only to ensure the op noticed it once the key was created.

And the op has confirmed his version lacking gpedit.msc.

Eventually, maybe something will turn up(manual tweak or 3rd party)

I tried TweakVI a while ago and found it to be not anywhere near as robust or effective as expected. Maybe a later version/update will prove better, but for now, its not something I'm using or relying on.

: Hi Winston--
: : According to several directions that have worked, it should be zero, but I
: wasn't able to find anything that explicitly said it would remove Documents
: on the *Classic menu, however as I said there is a gpedit.msc menu item that
: says it will do it. Someone could certainly try both values.
