| Can't update Vista Experience score/rating I initially got a rating of 1 using Vista Ultimate on my PC with the low number due to the video card. I upgraded my card with no problem but now I cannot update my score. I click the update link and it starts but just stalls with the indicator about 5-10% of the way through. I've tried it multiple times with reboots, etc. in between and always the same result even after leaving it run 3-4 hours. I'm always logged on as an administrator and I have been able to run Aero but still no change from the 1 score. Any ideas on why or how to remedy? Thanks, BR |

| Re: Can't update Vista Experience score/rating Hi brapp-- Can you help me figure out besides lol being a manipulative hardware marketing tool what possible substantive purpose that score (WEI or the Windows Experience Index) which is not an accurate reflection of some cutting edge hardware serves? Ferrari 1000: The Windows Experience Index (WEI) http://notgartner.wordpress.com/2006...erience-index/ The Windows Experience Index is a number which rates the hardware and software configuration on your machine as it relates to its ability to run Windows Vista. The one number you get is actually a base score which is actually the lowest of a number of sub-component scores. Wikipedia has a great entry with several links which describes which tests are performed in order to determine the scores. If you have a Vista machine handy you can get in and look at the Windows Experience Index by clicking on Start and typing “performance” into the search box, then selecting “Performance Information and Tools” from the results (usually the second in the list). | Re: Can't update Vista Experience score/rating BR: Also check the video card mfgr's website to make sure you have the most recent, Vista-compatible drivers for that new video card. Many WEI malfunctions are due to balky drivers. -- Andy Sweet Windows User Assistance team Microsoft Corporation |

| Re: Can't update Vista Experience score/rating Yes Aero does run but movement such as scrolling seems a bit slow or choppy and actually I turned it back off. I basically am curious to see what the Vcard upgrade did to the score and find out my next lowest link that maybe I can upgrade. I really didn't find anything that wonderful about Aero to warrant spending the $ to replace my 512mb of RAM with 1gb though and that now is probably my weak link for Aero to run smoothly. It just sticks in my craw that MS has this "wonderful" WEI tool that dies during the scanning for Aero compatability! It won't even cancel and I have to end task to get out of it. Kind of a real POS product if you ask me. Otherwise I like Vista. I expected needing hardware updates on a 5 year old machine but was more than bummed at how many of my not too old MS software products are not supported for Vista. More planned obsolecense I guess.
