| How dumb is Vista and why beta testers were probably lazy, clueless or both Let me count the ways. Oh wait, they're too many. Here's just another example of questionable programming, and even more sloppy incomplete testing. One of Windows' long time weaknesses has been and remains Windows Explorer. Not only is it a memory and resouces hog, it often just doesn't work well. Consider the following. I had a mere 8 video files in one folder on my "E" hard drive, total size of the group; 3.14 GB. I simply wanted to move them to a new "finished" folder on my "H" drive which is a USB 2.0 external. I won't even bother mentioning how slow Vista is compared to XP in doing this simply task, rather lets focus on WHY Vista is so dumb in doing this simple task. 1. By default I have both drives set to index. By default both drives are set to show thumbnails. As most already know when you copy or move files they don't get moved in any particular order. This is simply due to Windows trying to best use available disk space. 2. The flaw is because of this with indexing on, dumb as dirt Vista will begin to move the files, often starting in the middle or at the end. As fate would have it the first file moved began with letter "V" with the other seven files starting earlier in the alphabet. 3. On the surface this shouldn't matter. But remember Vista is DUMB with a capital D. So since the folder is set to show thumbnails it moves the first file, the one starting with the letter V in the file name, then goes to get the next one. Well guess what happens next. Yep, The scroll bar at the top of the Explorer window is "indexing". I timed it. It took 18 seconds to index 8 file names. 4. Obviously that is laughable. What's way worse is it repeated this insanity 5 more times. Again, starting from the beginning and reindexing these eight files, sometimes generating a thumbnail other times not. Three times it didn't reindex. The point is each time it took about 18 seconds, totally wasted time. 5. Finally after moving the 8 files it again reindexed them and going back one more time, finally creating a thumbnail for each which it had trouble doing during the move for reasons only Microsoft programmers know. The point that seems to zoom way over the top of Microsoft programmers is there is no valid reason to reindex while a move or copy operation is in process. It serves no purpose other than to slow Windows down. A far smarter method would be to move ALL the files, then index once. It would probably be even smarter to suspend drawing any thumbnails until the move operation was complete. Makes no sense to redraw thumbnails over and over, yet apparently that is what Vista does. Guess no beta tester noticed this odd behavior or complained about it or if they did, Microsoft true to form, simply ignored it. The irony is this probably isn't even considered a "bug" and I bet somebody will try to pass off this insanity as a "feature". The point is if this happens with just eight files and is annoying as hell, imagine the poor user moving a hundred or a thousand files watching the moronic Indexer repeating the sort over and over and over. Ridiculous! |

| Re: How dumb is Vista and why beta testers were probably lazy, clueless or both Adam be smart and turn indexing off.... its a horrid usless peice of crap added only because apple and google have their own versions. the sequence that files are copies is relative to which file is under your cursor at the time of drag and drop... that is the first one then it goes on from there try it.. you will see that it is not random. Adam you are correct that vista has been badly thought out from the begining..... they could have made it a very good OS. But you know.... in here you will be like preaching to rocks... most people in here dont have a clue about what you are saying.. give them aero glass, flip 3d and dreamscene, and they dont care about all those details! lol "Adam Albright" <AA@ABC.net> wrote in message news:iv2h43tpsa801j3mpdrsbiq2705hmt4jd1@4ax.com...[color=blue] > Let me count the ways. Sure, MS wants to hear about "bonafide" issues, but my experience has been that more often than not, those pleas fall on deaf ears. Back in the Win95 days, MS's favorite catch phrases for reports was "works as expected" or "not a showstopper". These days I believe issues are dismissed with "that is by design" <sigh> They have a clear agenda when it comes to software releases, and it has more to do with the "bottom line" than innovation or quality - and only much moreso since monkeyboy Ballmer assumed the reins. The lack of any real competition only perpetuates this nonsense. -- ======================================= "Microsoft is not about greed. Only a select few get in on the Alpha stage where usability and features are added/removed. Man, would I love to be in that group! -- Mike Matheny |

| Re: How dumb is Vista and why beta testers were probably lazy, clueless or both Best of all, Vista will try to load the video files even when it is copying or moving them. To prove this, 1) Try installing DivX (because it shows a tray icon when it is used) 2) Move a video file (.avi) 3) You'll see that the DivX tray icon appear at the taskbar (meaning that Vista loaded the file) And if you are moving 10 files, it loaded each one of them before moving them. Best of all, if you are in a slow network (VPN?) and you arrived at a folder full of videos (even with List view), prepare to wait for a very long time. The fact is most so-called support groups are infected with people that want attention, are wannabe types or are trying to sell something. Remove the Franks, Justins, most MVPs and Linux trolls and things would quite down. Fat chance of that happening. |

You original post is nothing but BS. 1. HOW explorer works has nothing to do with the beta testers. Our job is to test what we are given, not code. Your first mistake is your ignorance on the subject. 2. MANY explorer issues had bugs filed. It is not the beta testers job to fix the bugs. Your second mistake is your ignorance on the subject. Got any other bright things to say wuttle adum? |

Once you clear out the FUD threads, you can see a lot of people asking for help and getting answers to their questions. You won't see adam get an answer because he's a hated idiot that starts threads with extreme anger and comes off sounding like a complete a$$. His original post not only addressed an issue, but attacked every beta tester for no good reason as I stated in another post. I don't expect anyone to respect him and no one should. Now stay tuned and watch him call me names and basically say the exact same thing about me as I just said about him. |
