VISTA Changes my .exe file sizes and they wont run anymore Runtime error R6002!

VISTA has been changing the actual file size of some of my
program .exe files such that they generate Runtime error R6002 and
terminate. For example, cubase.exe has clean install file size of
10,000,000 bytes. After a few hours or a few days cubase.exe does not
run anymore and has a filesize of 10,000,512 bytes. This also happened
with quicktime.exe and a few other files. I can copy the
original .exes back into the affected directories and the programs run
again but they keep getting changed for some reason. I have turned off
indexing, system restore and almost every other service I can think
of. Any help would be appreciated. This happens on my VISTA Business
partition and also happened once I updated XPSP2 partition with all of
the current microsoft updates. I wonder if it has something to do with
some new updated features in both VISTA and XPSP2 but I dot know.

It sounds virus like. What antivirus solution are you using? Have you
scanned for viruses?

Re: VISTA Changes my .exe file sizes and they wont run anymore Runtime error R6002!

An operating system (no operating system) is not going to alter an
executable file unless you use a program that can open that file, make
changes, and then resave the file with the changes. If an "operating system"
were to do so there would be a massive howling and class action law suits
that would put that company out of business. I have not heard this howling.

You are infected I fear. There are virus's, trojans etc. that will add to
exe files. Seeing as how you dual boot it is likely that you have visited
the same web site under both O/S's and picked up a drive by download.

There are several available, check this newsgroup for recommendations.

One that's recommended is Avast, I can't say much about it other than
it seems to work well and I hate the interface!

Free version here: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

There are also several on-line scans available, I've had good luck with
Panda (although I don't much like their installed products).

Drogan:

If the others replies are correct, and if you have the time and inclination,
consider wiping the harddrive and re-installing (you can even use MaxBlast
to zero-fill the harddrive- that burns absolutely everything off save the
geometry).

And this time 'round install an anti-virus scanner and scan any downloads -
even pictures - before opening them; be careful about an ActiveX controls
websites want to run (as in "refuse" most); password protect your account
and don't let other people install stuff; leave UAC set to ON.

RE: VISTA Changes my .exe file sizes and they wont run anymore Runtime

Agreed
its more like virus rather than the windows vista.
If u dont wanna spend more money on your PC for antivirus......
REINSTALL your windows.
do a clean install.
and don't use the back up u made.

There is no antivirus that ships with Vista. Windows Defender is included
but it is an antispyware program. Someone mentioned Avast. It is good. AVG
is another free option. I use Nod32.

You all were right. I had win32:Parite all over my hard drive. I
cleaned this up and all my programs are running now. Thanks!. I still
have one problem with the Smitfraud trojan. My anitvirus software
detects it and neither Avast, SpywareDoctor or Spyware Remover can
seem to get rid of it. They all run then ask to reboot the computer
and then run on reboot but cant seem to get rid of the problem. I
still get random popup iexplorer windows. The core service file cant
seem to be deleted. There was a winxp Smitfraud utility that wont run
on Vista. Is there anything that can be recommended?

Thanks again for the help.

Re: VISTA Changes my .exe file sizes and they wont run anymore Runtime

Try Comodo's BOClean, it's free.
http://www.comodo.com/boclean/boclean.html

Works just fine on Vista. Be sure to right click
the setup/install file and select "Run as Administrator".
After installing you'll need to reboot.

I also suggest that you might want to invest in a better
AV. Avast is fine, but NOD32 is better. It's not free
but it is worth paying for, and they do have a free trial.

Let me know if BOClean solved your problem.

Re: VISTA Changes my .exe file sizes and they wont run anymore Runtime

I should add, BOClean is not a manual scanner;
<quote>
BOClean watches memory, registry, and the file system waiting for malware to load up and then
shuts it down before they have a chance to operate. This is the ONLY method which ensures that
malware cannot steal your data since it never got a chance to do its dirty deeds. In addition,
we remove all of its hooks and restore your system to its original condition AUTOMATICALLY. No
removal instructions to look up and apply manually, no down time.
</quote>

Just install it and reboot, hopefully it catches the critter.
