Vista smaller start button?

hey all,

the start button in vista is big enough that it overhangs into the
real estate for my maximized putty terminal shells, and covers up bits
of my shell prompt. is there a way to shrink the size of the start
button in vista, or otherwise get it out of the way of the window it's
'always on top' of?

i do not want to 'auto-hide' the task bar, so that is out of the
question. i just want a normal sized, or trimmed start button, so
it's not on top of my window, and covering up text in shells.

thanks!

Be a true power user, and switch to classic theme.
