I am running vista 32 ultimate and have been updating fine with windows
update then one day it stops installing them also the windows defender wont
start up or update either so i think the problems are linked i have tried
with out firewall and anti virus running i have tried replacing teh system
file that is suggested in another post. in windows update i get various error
codes never the same one twice. an suggestions because its getting annoying
now

update i found a possible solution

Stop service wuauserv.
Delete/Rename %windir%\SoftwareDistribution
Start service wuauserv.
Try the update again.

this worked with me i know how only defender to work
