Which version of JRE 6 should I be running on Vista Ultimate 64 bit?

I have seen an x64 file that has AMD in its filename. Is this OK for an
Intel quad core processor?
or is it even necessary to run a 64 bit version at all? Does the normal
win32 version work OK?

There are that many options and cross references on the Sun Java site that I
am going round in circles to find the correct version.

What I am trying to avoid is installing the wrong version, uninstalling and
leaving behind remnants, that will then cause the correct version (when I
find it) to be unstable.

Hi:
You should install the 32-bit version of JRE6.
That is because the 64-bit version of Java does not have the browser
plug-in, so it is useless in IE64.
IE32 is the default IE and works nicely together with JRE6 32-bit.
Latest one is "Update 1" (u1).

Thanks Carlos, I didn't even realise that both x86 and x64 versions of IE
could be run at will.

However this raises more questions
Should I download the "offline" installer and do it manually, or
should I be in IE7 x86 and run the "online" installer from there?

I obviously need the x86 version of java and IE to get java functionality in
the browser.
But..... I also run apps (one at least important to me) that require java to
run but have
nothing to do with IE. I assume that these should run using the 32 bit JRE
as well (after
all the program that requires it is 32 bit). However, supposing I "need"
64bit java for a 64 bit app that requires it.
Can you have both x86 and x64 versions of the JRE installed at the same
time?
Program Files should keep them apart, or would they interfere with each
other?

Question #1:
I usually download the offline version.
Very handy for installation on multiple machines or reinstalls.

Question #2:
Both versions of JRE get installed in their corresponding different folders.
JRE64 goes to Program Files
JRE32 goes to Program Files (x86)
I have never installed both of themsimultaneously but I think you should not
have any problems.
