| Another lie I've seen posted here I don't know how many times I've seen those who claim to know WTF they are talking about, say that it is not "legal" or allowed by Microsoft for folks using a Vista beta to be able to purchase an Upgrade version of Vista and install it on top of their Vista beta. Numerous posters were told they would have to buy the full version. Wrong. http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2007/04/24/windows-vista-beta-2-rc1-and-rc2-set-to-expire.aspx <quote> There are no product discounts specifically for participants in the Customer Preview Program; however, because you are using a pre-release version of Windows Vista Ultimate, you can purchase and use the Upgrade version of Windows Vista. </quote> -Michael |

However, my point, is that beta versions of Vista were not supposed to qualify for an upgrade version- so we were told by those in the know. That question was asked many times in this forum right before and after Vista's release. A lot of those beta users were told they would have to purchase the full version. First, it was that the upgrade version wouldn't work at all on a beta version, and then it was because it was supposedly not allowed. It is a shame that this type of confirmation did not come out sooner. It is also a shame that some users just think they know everything and told beta testers the wrong information, as if it was an absolute. -Michael |

| Re: Another lie I've seen posted here Michael Don't be too critical with people who previously posted that information. Their comments were based on how Microsoft had handled previous operating system beta and CPP programs. The information that Nick posted on the blog is a result of 'very' recent decisions by Microsoft due to the feedback they have been receiving in recent months from beta testers and CPP participants. The really good thing, just like with the early licensing issues, is that it shows that they are listening. :) -- Ronnie Vernon Microsoft MVP Windows Shell/User "MICHAEL" <u158627_emr2@dslr.net> wrote in message news:OZi%23ox3hHHA.1220@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... >I don't know how many times I've seen those who > claim to know WTF they are talking about, say > that it is not "legal" or allowed by Microsoft > for folks using a Vista beta to be able to purchase > an Upgrade version of Vista and install it on top of > their Vista beta. | Re: Another lie I've seen posted here I see no mention of the words "NEW policy". Why didn't they announce this "NEW policy" 4, 3, 2, 1 month(s) ago? Sure would have made a lot more sense, and more than likely, saved some beta users quite a few bucks. Read this quote from Nick White (a Vista Product Manager), again: <quote> There are no product discounts specifically for participants in the Customer Preview Program; however, because you are using a pre-release version of Windows Vista Ultimate, you can purchase and use the Upgrade version of Windows Vista. </quote> Nick says it like it's always been that way. -Michael mikeyhsd wrote: > since the NEW policy was just announced YESTERDAY, anything that was posted saying you could not before yesterday was NOT a lie. > > > > mikeyhsd@comcast.net > > > > "MICHAEL" <u158627_emr2@dslr.net> wrote in message news:OZi%23ox3hHHA.1220@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... > I don't know how many times I've seen those who > claim to know WTF they are talking about, say > that it is not "legal" or allowed by Microsoft > for folks using a Vista beta to be able to purchase > an Upgrade version of Vista and install it on top of > their Vista beta. | Re: Another lie I've seen posted here Blogs that those of us who are retail purchasers and users but are not Microsoft blog enthusiasts, might expect Microsoft to report in a more forthright manner, with some pre-planning (!) in fact, about these matters. Vista has been hurt, in my opinion, by the constant "you must purchase a full version" and "there is no install-over-top option like there was in XP" and other tales; I don't infer anything malicious, just misguided in the absence of anything from Microsoft for clarity. This has been one badly handled release when it comes to licensing. I did the "anytime upgrade" to Ultimate; even though I couldn't stand the "move once to a new machine but never again" EULA. Then somewhere I see someone's BLOG that the restriction has been rewritten; so I go to the EULA .pdf files and re-read for changes. Nothing has ever changed. Perhaps it has by now; I doubt it. I hope I still have links for these messages from MS bloggers that belong in official MS documentation. I wonder how many posts there were in the *.vista newsgroups over the months that this-and-that were not possible, and they were all along. Perhaps some apologies are in order. MVP's who don't know, shouldn't proffer advice. BLOGgers who know but don't see to it that official MS information isn't updated are just as wrong. "Just my opinion." Unless, this decision had already been decided upon awhile back, but no one decided to let anyone know. That's just wrong. Two things: Those users who were told no you can't do that. Many of them probably went out and bought the full version. That's not right. There were a few users who stated that they had indeed used an upgrade version on their Vista beta and were called out for it... comments about their character and honesty. Instead of stating things as absolutes, there may be times when saying "I'm/we're not sure" is better. Microsoft actually communicating important information in a timely manner would be the best thing. I certainly won't hold my breath. What really pisses me off, I lied, too. I told a friend and one user in this forum that they had to buy the full version because that is what I had read in this forum- that was the "allowed" way to migrate to Vista RTM. Silly me for being so ignorant. Take care, Michael |
