| Is there any way to get vista explorer to act more like xp explorer (or could you suggest an alternative) Hi I've had Vista for about a month now and think its great (once all the eye-candy crap is turned off..).I found it simple to install and update and I have'nt had one lockup in a month (apart from during the initial install when it locked up during a driver update (a dvb-t card)), and it seems to run fine for days without needing a reboot. But I have one gripe - The abomination that is the new file manager. There are just so many things wrong with it.However it may just be me so I'm going to list a few of my gripes and maybe some kind soul could help with a fix, or some workarounds (or maybe somebody could recommend a file manager that fully integrates with the os and replaces explorer (in all views)- I looked at Opus but its not Vista compatible). 1) Virtual folders - I Don't need 'em (I use TrueLaunch Bar which allows me to create my own virtual folders from the taskbar that open + close in "Mac" like way.Can I turn them off, since they just steal screen estate in the folder tree view. 2) The "up" button so that I can move up one level out of the folder that I am currently In - using the breadcrumb thing is not as simple and slows me down. 3) Can i get rid of the Toolbar that keeps changing (the one with "burn" on it) - its far too big and just takes screen estate + the actual commands (cut, paste, etc) that I might use are hidden in the organize button. There is no point in pressing that button since its quicker just to right-click (and I don't have to move the mouse). 4) Folder views constantly changing. No one folder ever seems to stay on the same view - I use the details view for everything. How can I make it just use that view (and clicking on "apply to folder" in folder options just does'nt work - I do that at least a dozen times a day, quite often on the same folder). 5) when working deep in nested folders in the folder view in the left pane the view automatically shifts to right so that you can see the full name - How can I stop this. I want to see the tree structure not the full name when I am simply moving through folders quickly with the up-down keys. 6) how can I make the little "+" (nested folders) signs stick in the tree view on the left - i find it distracting that they flash on and off when working in the other pane (a minor gripe :) ). 7) The breadcrumb thing is next to useless as I can just go straight to where I want in the folder tree. Can i set this just to display the full path without having to click on it 1st (useful for copying a location). 8) Finally I find that the cut & paste options just don't work properly - If i cut a big folder with lots of others inside, more often than not I am left with some empty folders (in the original location) after paste + no amount of cutting & pasteing moves them. So I have to check them to see if there are any files in them (which so far there have'nt) and then delete them.(If I go deeper into the nest and then cut & paste them - they do move - but this is a pain). One other thing (nothing to do with the file manager) is that I have the inedexed search turned off (I keep a tidy system and don't need it) - On the rare occasions that I might use the file search It nags me that the indexed search is turned off - How can I stop my PC from nagging me about it (like I don't get enough of that in life...!!!))
