While Linux offers many SIMILAR applications to what can be found that run under Windows, even mocking the Windows desktop layout, even improving on it in some respects in some flavors of Linux, the sad part is the top of the line developers that account for 95% of all quality software do NOT develop for Linux. Simple Reason. NO MARKET. So if you are happy with knocked off watered down versions of common software products or have no need for professional grade software, Linux, regardless of flavor may be fine for your limited needs. However, if you need powerful applications designed for and by professionals to do professional grade work, Linux, except for a handful of exceptions is seriously lacking and the number one reason it hasn't and won't get a serious foothold until that changes and Microsoft knows that all too well. I know... I've looked and been looking for years. Over 80% of what software I use for video editing has nothing close to it on the Linux platform. So I would either have to settle for mickey mouse crap I simply refuse to use since I won't comprosize quality or try to get Windows software to run under a hack like WINE, which for something like video editing is way more trouble than it is worth in the attempt and again I've tried. |

While I feel you have a right to share your views, even if this forum is poor choice to share them in since saying what you say here in a Windows support group, no doubt is seen by many as intrusive and in the end counterproductive, if your goal is to win converts to your preferred OS. |

They use a computer for buying in the groceries, email, writing the odd letter & buying presents from Amazon :-) So Ubuntu will do all of that & i'd have saved myself the cost of an XP license. Except now my Dad has discovered flight simulators & Flight Sim X is his new toy, so I am glad I put XP on cos i'd probably be doing so for him at some point. |

Even I am scratching my head in confusion here. Where exactly did he make any reference to other users systems? I personally read his statement as his system being miles ahead of what the requirements for Windows XP are. I don't anywhere see him refer to your, mine, or any other users system. -- Stephan 2003 Yamaha R6 君のこと思い出す日なんてないのは 君のこと忘れたときがないから |

I was able to load and use Windows XP in a virtual machine. I start up this machine at least once a day to run Xnews. I like the speed, security, and the appearance of my KDE desktop. Everything seems to run a lot faster than Windows and it does not seem to slow down, when I run multiple programs in multiple desktops including the desktop on which I run the Windows XP virtual machine. For anyone that heavily uses XNEWS, you will notice that after a few hours, your Windows will slow down (especially in newsgroups that have a lot of headers). With the virtual machine, I just shut it off and restart it without loosing any time. I have always liked Linux from the first time that I tried it in 2003. After Windows 2000...it looked great. I was disappointed in Vista. I tried out the Beta and have used it on other people's machines. After using Linux, it seems awfully slow and awkward. It should have been as revolutionary as XP, but it wasn't, and for the first time I can truly say that it is easier to learn and use a friendly Linux distro than to use the latest Windows Operating System. It shouldn't be this way, but it is. Microsoft has failed.
