Any chance of returning Vista for XP at Circuit City??

Bought a nice Gateway PC with Vista on it at Circuit City. I'm so
utterly lost with Vista I don't think I'll ever climb out of the hole
it put me in. Mostly the filing/folder system, locations, etc. I've
lost so much data I'm going crazy.

What I'd like to do is to take the Gateway back to Circuit City and
ask for a replacement equivalent unit with XP on it before the 30-day
satisfaction guaranteed promise is still valid. I'd of course have to
pull off whatever documents I've already created, but I'm just lost
with Vista.

Whatya think? Worth a try?

Re: Any chance of returning Vista for XP at Circuit City??

Hi,

If you're sure that you really don't want Vista -- and that you can get your
money back -- return the Vista machine.

If Circuit City claims they have no XP PCs left, Dell is now offering XP on
their machines again, plus I'm sure there are other brands that you can buy
that come with XP as its operating system.

It is your decision. No one here can answer for Circuit City as to what
their response will be.

The filing & folder locations aren't that different to XP.

They're not?? What about all these??:

Why so many changes? Simple. This is by design.

All the changes, including widespread renaming of "default" folders and
apps, rearranging of menus with no rhyme or reason, and apparently for no
real purpose, confusing new graphic interface, are all necessary to make
Vista look sufficiently different from previous versions of Windows. This
only serves one purpose; to create the illusion that Vista is a new OS. Dig
deep enough and you can find dialogs and graphics leftover from Windows
3.11.
What is truly amazing is just how many people continue to fall for this old
and tired MS sales tactic.

Otherwise, people would see it for what it really is, just another XP
Service Pack, or as I prefer to call it, Windows 95 v4.0

Consider, no one will ever offer an explanation as to WHY all these
system-wide changes were implemented, much less needed. This is just another
example of how the Marketing Dept. is now the driving force at Microsoft.

Be sure and go when there's a lot of people in the store and speak with
a loud voice so everyone can hear.

Re: Any chance of returning Vista for XP at Circuit City??

Well, if they say they've got a 30-day period in which to return something,
that's gotta mean SOMETHING, right?
If you're dissatisfied with it, don't see why their satisfaction-guaranteed
promise wouldn't apply.
Do you have a copy of the policy? Have you reread it?

You might want to check, though, for the dreaded "restocking fee." They may
actually charge you something to take it back.

Folder/File structure is still exactly the same, just organized
differently. Personally I prefer the way it is in Vista.

Does it really matter if you have to go to a Documents folder to get
to a user, or a User Folder to get to a document?

I 'd rather go to a User folder to get to a document myself.

As stated before with indexing you really don't need to use explorer
anymore anyways to find a file. just type it in the search box.
Granted there are certain situation where you need to use Explorer
but on the most part you dont need to anymore.

Agreed. When I returned on many years ago, they had a 15% restocking fee if
you couldn't find something else to replace it with at a higher price. Even
then it was a hassle.

It's apparent that you're easily confused and have no real understanding
of Windows, MS or Vista or even computers.
Don't you think it's about time for you to switch to something more
er...childishly designed like Ubuttoo.
I hear that flipping that cubie thing is not very challenging at all and
really fun!

Re: Any chance of returning Vista for XP at Circuit City??

You may not have much recourse with Circuit City - However,
you are entitled to run/use a previous Operating System in place
of Vista. ( Part of the licensing of Microsoft Operating Systems ).
I would pick up the phone and call Gateway. Returning the whole
PC just to rid yourself of Vista is a little extreme but it may be the
only practical way to get new hardware with XP pre-installed.

A previously owned operating system, as with an upgrade. They do not
provide an earlier operating system which was never owned and licensed.

I seriously doubt you've permanently lost (as in deleted) any data.
You just don't know where to find it.
This is actually the one biggest complaint about Vista...that is it has
changed the location of various folders and some users (like yourself)
have become very frustrated.
I feel your pain but giving up is not the solution because Vista ain't
going away. It is the future and once you become accustomed to it, all
will be ok.
Try solving your problems one at a time and before you know it they'll
all be solved.

And try and use this ng for real help...like posting one problem,
getting help to solve it, then post another. And don't listen to the
airhead losers in this ng. They've already given up and are even more
frustrated than you are.
It will work if you work it.

No they're not.
Apply a little common sense & it's real easy to locate where things have
moved to.
As to "losing" data. lol.
