| Testing Linux . . . I have been hearing about Linux Free O/S's for many years now, and I have decided to try it out on one of my older P/C's - one that I built from parts purchased at PC Club which I have replaced with this one (hp Pavillion). Checked the Ubuntu website and v7.04 will be released on the 19th and have ordered the CD of it. If it works with my peripherals and current software - Hasta La Vista Microsoft! This Windows Vista O/S is turning out to be the final straw, from vanishing icons to IE7 shutting down randomly without cause to having to get help at every turn just to make this thing work as advertised (which it still does not!), is proving to be my undoing, or rather Microsofts undoing. I belong to a nationwide volunteer organization and we all use our computers extensively and it gets darned expensive trying to keep up with Billionare Gates and Company just to do our bit for the everday people we work with. There is a membership of more than a hundred thousand and if this free Ubuntu O/S works, I shall make a recommendation to the entire organization to make the switch. Good luck to you all, and thank you all for trying to help this retired old f**t work out the bugs in this Vista O/S, but I believe there are just way too many "workarounds" that take way too long and are way too complicated to get this thing to work as advertised . . . Did I mention that it still doesn't work as advertised? Paparowe |

I've found that generally a mainstream Linux distribution to be quite a bit easier to install than MS. For one thing you don't need all the driver disks. |

| Re: Testing Linux . . . Heard you the first time paparowe, bet you any money this will not be Microsofts' undoing, Linux maybe free to very cheap, but wait until you need support with Linux (paid support that is), and you will see how much it costs. I think that was Linux's undoing. Can't even give away for free. - Vusta "paparowe" <papannanarowe@frontiernet.net> wrote in message news:6C99C8F0-CC6F-41F5-8A2A-D5300E6AA96B@microsoft.com... :I have been hearing about Linux Free O/S's for many years now, and I have : decided to try it out on one of my older P/C's - one that I built from parts : purchased at PC Club which I have replaced with this one (hp Pavillion). : Checked the Ubuntu website and v7.04 will be released on the 19th and have : ordered the CD of it. SE Idaho is that way. |

For one thing you don't need all > the driver disks. >[/color] "Driver disks"? I was not asked for any driver disks when I installed Vista. Most of the drivers are on the installation CD/DVD. Defend Linux all you want, and trash Windows (any version) all you want. But it is intellectually dishonest to just make crap up and claim that it is a Windows drawback. I don't know of a single driver disk that's needed in addition to the installation CD/DVD. I've seen some posts about SATA drivers (or is it RAID?) on a floppy, but since I've never had to use such a thing I have no idea what it's for and whether Vista even requires it. And even if Vista does, that's ONE driver disk. You referred to ALL the driver disks, implying there were many. Please tell us what you're referring to, or tell us that you just made that up. |
