| what kind of person I can't help wonder what kind of person spends what is clearly hours and hours in this forum for what appears to be no other reason then to endless piss on Microsoft in general and Vista in particular. If they hate both so much why aren't they out shopping for a MAC so they can get on with their life? I have actually had less trouble getting my new Vista Machine up and running then I did with my Old machine when XP was new and so was the old machine. |

Obviously lots of folks here are having somewhat more difficulty than you did. |

I just want Microsoft to learn this is MY computer, not their computer. Think that is too much to expect considering I paid for it? |

| Re: what kind of person Ah, but here's an interesting twist: Those Mac users who bought the Intel machines are trying Windows XP and even Vista with a host of different results. Yeah, some whine and gripe about it because they're A) not paying attention to the instructions, or B) forgetting that the tools are still a beta (Boot Camp, VMWare Fusion), or C) experiencing real hardware problems that do need a fix, but they are simply impatient and love to gripe anyway. The Windows-on-Mac phenomenon has largely been a good thing for Apple, as their machines can now compete head-on with the best in the Windows universe. Those who try it and succeed love the flexibility they have of running most anything,. Yet they spend much more time in the Mac OS because they find it less stressful to work with. I should know. I have a Mac running Vista on the side, and I haven't had a lot of problems with their latest Boot Camp so far. I spend a lot of time trying to help interested Apple users bridge the gap between their world and Windows. This from a man who wants to find balance between a life spent troubleshooting thousands of problematic Windows machines and a quiet life as a writer on a Mac. Go figure. | Re: what kind of person Playing devil's advocate for a bit here, and being a new Vista user, I can see what some of the 'pissings' about. You would think that with each new upgrade, things would get better/easier. Not so with Vista from my short experience. Constant warning messages, not to mention the lack of support for practically all of my hardware (I know, a vendor problem, but really...) Even with my old XP pro, I swear there isn't a day goes by that something that used to work yesterday, does not work today. The last time this happened, the culprit was the result of an automatically downloaded MS Security update. I had to scour Google for a fix to this 'fix'. Sometimes you just need a place to vent. I"ve been PCing since day 1 with MS stuff, and for the first time I am very seriously thinking of trying Linux. It can't be worse; can it? | Re: what kind of person Get a life! Do you honestly think you're going to change one of the most lucrative businesses in the world by whining publicly in a newsgroup about having spent too much on a product you don't like? Try the Better Business Bureau, a lawyer, or better yet, the store where you bought it. Next time, don't buy until you know. If everyone followed that practice, the business would change overnight. There was a familiarity, a continuity of sorts from Win9x thru XP & Server 2003 that is not in Vista (as you've probably noticed). IOW, things are not where they used to be! Plus, the way in which Vista uses System memory and video memory are different and require more robust hardware than ever before. This is all in preparation for things to come in the use and direction of PC's. And the inclusion of things like UAC have forced us all to adapt to how Vista works. I personally don't have any real problems running any of my hardware,(and some of it is old (8yrs!) or software. I have had to run some in compatibility mode and use a few work arounds but all in all, I'm very satisfied with Vista. BTW, I'm running 5 desktops, one laptop. I have two 32bit Vista Ultimates and one 64 bit Ultimate installed. I'm dual booting one desktop and triple booting another. I'm running three XP Pro SP2's along with the three Vista's and one Server 2003 SP2 and one Windows Home Server Beta 2 on an old Celeron 1gig CPU. I build all of my computers, install the software and maintain them myself. I've used at least a half dozen distros of linux over the years, but eventually, linux (at least for me) turns into a job that does not pay. YMMV Frank |

They are complaining about and trashing ( sometimes legitimately so, other times not) what they use, based on the "wow" factor they have experienced or not. You also might be surprised at the number of windows users/supporters that frequent this ng that do use an iteration of linux along with windows. And don't forget that the mindless supporters (who refuse to recognize the reality/severity of some of the vista issues) can be seen in as bad a light as the mindless bashers. -- norm |

IOW, things are not where they used to be![/color] And for good reason... This is by design. All the changes, including widespread renaming of "default" folders and apps, rearranging of menus with no rhyme or reason, and apparently for no real purpose, confusing new graphic interface, are all necessary to make Vista look sufficiently different from previous versions of Windows. Otherwise, people would see it for what it really is, just another XP Service Pack, or as I prefer to call it, Windows 95 v4.0 This is just another example of how the Marketing Dept. is now the driving force at Microsoft. -- ======================================= "If you can't make it good, at least make it look good." - Bill Gates ======================================= |

| Re: what kind of person And some of us just don't like the way they did Vista. I don't like the interface. I turned off the 'new' menus in XP and have done the same, as much as possible, in Vista. If I want pretty, I'll go to an art gallery. I want my computer to WORK, first time, every time. I don't want shadowing, slide out menus, Aero or much of the other junk they keep tossing in as 'improvements'. Eye candy doesn't make it work better, it just ups the hardware requirements & slows it down.. If I don't know enough to keep malware off my system, I better learn or quit going to those sites that you're likely to get it.
